For most U.S. citizens, buying a gun is pretty simple. Go to your local gun store, pick your gun, show photo I.D., fill out the background check form (approval is usually immediate), and then pay for your gun.
It's even easier in the case of private guns sales. If you purchase a firearm from a person who isn't a licensed dealer, the identification and background check requirements disappear -- even if the seller is at a gun show.
So let's take a look at eight common activities that require more time, information or effort than owning a gun:
1. Voting
Want to vote for president? Most states require you to register in advance, as much as 30 days, before Election Day.
Want a gun? In most states you can purchase a gun the day you decide you want one.
Additionally, if you purchase a gun through a private sale, there is no identification requirement. In some states, you must provide identification to vote.
2. Buying antihistamines
Due to ingredients in antihistamines being used to make meth, federal regulations now place a limit on the amount of pseudoephedrine an individual can purchase each month.
Federal law (and most state laws) does not limit the number of firearms that you can buy in one transaction.
3. Bringing a dog into a restaurant
Paris Hilton can't carry her Chihuahua into an Olive Garden in her purse, but a Glock 23 would be welcome.
Forty-nine states allow citizens to carry concealed firearms in public. The FDA prohibits most dogs in restaurants in all 50 states.
4. Driving a car
Buying a gun does not require providing a social security number, vision test or a competency test (such as a driver's test) in most states. Federal ATF form 4473 (the government form filled out when a person purchases a firearm) lists the Social Security Number field as "optional."
5. Drinking a beer
The age requirement to purchase a shotgun or rifle is18 years old, but you need to be 21 years old to drink alcohol. In Arizona you can also legally purchase a handgun at 18 through a private sale.
6. Getting a cell-phone contract
Wireless carriers will deny you a cell phone contract if you don't provide a social security number. You are not required to give your social security information to purchase a gun.
7. Getting a credit card
Again, most creditors require providing a social security number, not so for gun purchase.
8. Acquire a hunting or fishing license
You don't need to provide your SSN to purchase a gun, but you do to use it to hunt. Federal and state laws adopted to help enforce child-support payments require applicants for hunting and fishing licenses to provide their social security number the first time they purchase a license.

Re: Something to consider. (Shooting related.)
Not in the Aurora shootings and not in the Seattle shootings, they weren't.
We can't base all of our opinions on today's tragedy. It has to be the catalyst for discussion, and this article shows where there are some major flaws in current gun ownership laws.

I agree. IMO - assault rifles are not needed by civilians.
If you are of sound mind/health/body and choose to keep a pistol in your home for safety, I will not side-eye.
I'm so torn right now. I hate the sweeping generalization that all guns are bad. But today has me confused.
He was 24, old enough to have a gun.
We do not know if the mother was the purchaser of the gun. Where are you getting your information?
As of the last conference they didn't even "confirm" the shooters real identity. CNN f*cked that up when they gave the wrong information.

There was a knife attack in a school in China today.
There were 20 injuries, 0 deaths.
They hurt a large group of people. They did not kill a large group of people.

That's the brother. The shooter was only 20.
Well, I was wrong. Thanks for the information.

Maybe. But it's harder to kill a group of people with a knife or a car. You could use a bomb, but you're not guaranteed that it will go off right or at all. And you have to be more pre-meditative to build a bomb, where, with a gun, you can go crazy minutes before shooting up a crowd of people.
Cars are not made to be weapons. Yes, they at times are used that way. But that is not their purpose. The purpose of a gun is to serve as a weapon. To kill.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize hunting was not killing, or attempting to kill.
The Huffington Post is just about as balanced as Fox News.
Buying a gun legally is not simple in my state. To get a LTC you need to take a 6 week class, fill out an application (must include 4 references) and interview with the local police officer in charge of licences. Then you are fingerprinted and photographed. The information is sent to the state and 4 months later you might get your license. Then there is a complex set of laws regarding the purchase, sale, and storage of weapons. The only people who obtain guns easily here are the criminals.
Don't put words in my mouth. I said nothing on my stance about gun control. I was responding to your weak argument about banning cars because they kill more people.
I'm all for 2nd amendment rights but I will say that I was surprised how easy it was to buy a gun. I think it took me 20 minutes.
I do think laws should be stricter. I don't think assault riles should be readily available to thebpublic. However, as PPs mentioned, people this sick will find ways to get them.
It's human nature to want a reason for these tragedies and people are so quick to blame lack of gun control. There are much bigger underlying problems here. How does someone get that effed up in the head?
If anything, I think you took things out of perspective. It sounds like you're saying people's inconvenience in obtaining a gun is more important than the lives saved by making it harder to obtain a gun.
Why should it be easy to get a gun? It's one of the most dangerous items most Americans will ever own. The bar should be high, gun owners should have to prove they're responsible enough to own a weapon intended to kill. I don't care if they're inconvenienced, if they're serious about owning a gun then they should be willing to endure a little inconvenience.
If it was harder to legally obtain a gun then it would become harder to illegally obtain a gun. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen, some criminals will always obtain guns and there will always be gun deaths (accidental or otherwise). But who farking cares so long as we prevent at least some tragedies like this? At some point an X% increase in difficulty obtaining a gun is with the Y% decrease in gun fatalities.
I did go back and retread, I couldn't figure out why your first response dismissed CG's OP unless you thought that gun control is currently at an appropriate level. I'm still a little confused about your stance because you say strict gun laws are great, then you dismiss them because they'll only save some lives,
There have been a lot of these discussions today and I haven't seen one person say that gun control will eliminate gun violence. It's a straw man that deviates from the actual issue.

What useful thing do you do with hand guns or semiautomatic rifles other than end life?
The purpose of a car is to get from point A to point B. The consequence of poor car usage is death - a consequence which we try to minimize through legislation like seat belt laws, driver's license exams (written and driving), speed limits, etc..
So what useful thing do you do with handguns and semiautomatic rifles other than end a life?
And if you can find one, let us consider that EVEN WITH OTHER THINGS THAT PROVE DEADLY, we try to mitigate the risk of death via legislation for the public good (e.g. seatbelts, speed limits, etc..).
So. . . I mean. . . got another resemblance argument for me? Shall we discuss baseball bats?

We've had 3 mass shootings in the last 6 months. 2 in the last week. All have been gun violence.
Yes, we need better mental health care in this country. Until that happens, we need to figure out a way to ensure that people going into a movie theater, a mall, or a f'ucking elementary school don't get shot all to hell.
This would not have happened with a bat. It would not have happened with a knife. People would've (and, in the case of the knife, did today in China) survived.
There needs to be a change in this country. We need to recognize the the lives of children are more important than your right to keep and bear arms. There need to be significant and strict restrictions on gun ownership.

We are a gun toting family. I love the fact that my husband hunts. Free meat is awesome.
But, as a resident of VA, I see some of the worst gun laws in the country. There's a reason many gun crimes in NY have weapons that came from VA.
There needs to be tighter restrictions, including (which I think is the most important), mental health background checks/screenings.
I know this guy gut the guns from his mother, but people like the VA Tech shooter just mosey on in and buy them even when they've had mental health issues before.
