"It is never too late to be what you might have been.
Whooping cough is going around in my area and my OB wants me to get it on week 28 appointment which is next week. My husband got it last week as well. Some places give it to you at the hospital after birth, and I asked my OB about this and she said she recommends that I get it while pregnant.
I got it. My Dr was really insistent since where I live, there have been numerous outbreaks. She said the shot can give my baby antibodies (this is controversial) but I figured I should get it since if the baby is exposed to the whooping caugh, it can be fatal
I got this at my last appointment. I told my doctor I was hesitant because I am not really one for vaccines.. She said she got it when she was pregnant and that she highly recommends it. I hadn't gotten a tetanus shot in awhile, so that is covered in this vaccine as well. She said it really was important mainly for the pertussis(sp?) portion of it and recommended that my husband get it as well to protect the baby. Honestly, if you are hesitant, don't get it. I kind of regret getting it, only because it hasn't been around that long so it makes me worry that there hasn't been enough research done on the long term effects of it.. BUT I am fine, and I felt fine after the vaccination, minus a red, sore, and swollen injection site for about a week.
I asked my Dr. about it at my last appt. She said that I will get it in the hospital before I go home. My H is going to get it and we are most likely asking our parents to get it since they will be around a lot.
I just got the shot today. My sister and her DH had it a few weeks ago and so I know it's close. I have heard it is going around in our area too. I decided to get the shot as our clinic was offering it free anyway. I think it is better safe than sorry and I seriously doubt that it can harm my baby at all.
I will not get it. The vaccine doesn't protect from all pertussis strains. Many of the pertussis outbreaks are occurring in those already vaccinated because they are not the same strain as the vax. Ask your doc if vax protects only from Bordetella pertussis or ALSO Bordetella parapertussis, which is what the main outbreaks have been. *i do not believe the current vax protects from parapertussis, but I could be wrong so check with your doc first.
Know that the vaccine is not a guarantee against contracting the disease.
Parapertussis is a much milder illness than Pertussis. The reason why Pertussis is so dangerous is that this specific bacterium produces a toxin that can result in significant tissue damage and thus potentially severe illness in infected people. It is true that the pertussis vaccine does not protect against parapertussis but that is a mute point considering it is a much milder infection. Please stop spreading misinformation unless you have your facts straight.
Yes, I am getting this. Whooping Cough can be fatal if an infant contracts it. My booster is due anyway so I'll be getting it on schedule after delivery.
There is no reason to fear getting the vaccine. Studies show it is safe. Fear about the vaccine is natural because it seems scary to inject anything, but these fears are unfounded. Misinformation has been spread through misinformed celebrities, but there is no reason to put your child at risk.
it's better protection that if you didn't get it though.
This, hands down, every time. I have an appt Friday and hoping I can get the tdap vaccine then (even though I had it in 2007) just because I like the fact that my baby will have some (not 100%, but some is better than none) protection before he receives his vax's at 2 months old.

For real, when did we start taking medical advice from Jenny McCarthy seriously? Was it her status as a Playboy playmate of the year, or perhaps her numerous Razzie awards? *headdesk*
ETA: I will be getting the vaccine on Friday, I think. If not, then after our move or in the hospital immediately after delivery. Would rather get it before delivery to maximize the possibility of LO getting some protection.
Yep, I got it. Apparently I was supposed to get it in the hospital when I delivered DS, but I must have slipped through the cracks (and I didn't know). So, I got it at my last appointment. DH is getting it on Friday.

False. The outbreaks are occurring because too many people are not getting vaccinated, or getting boosters on time. It doesnt last forever, it's only like 5 years. Then the weak who cannot get vaccinated like newborn babies and those with compromised immune systems are left to suffer and possibly die because of the growing ignorance being spread about vaccines. Talk to any parent who has lost a child to a preventable disease and then ask yourself is it worth it.

I got it last year when my nephew was born, I think it last for 10 years so I don't need to get it again. My parents were also vaccinated at the same time as me. My DH and his parents are getting the shot before the baby gets here.
My entire family and inlaws who will be around the baby recieved it as we'll as myself. Whooping cough is on the rise and recent cases have shown that newborns are becoming severely sick and some dying do to non vaccination. It's quick and painless and could possibly save your baby's life so definitely worth it!
I did not give any misinformation in my comment. I simply stated for the OP to find out if it covers parapertussis. Which you agreed, it does not. I did not claim that that the disease is not deadly. im well aware of the dangers associated with contracting pertussis and I gave no advice whether she should receive the shot, I just told her to ask for some more info from her doc, since she has some comcerns. I think all people should ask questions and understand what they are getting with vax - I'm not here to make a statement or give advice except that each person should do their own research.

This. I'm not even getting the 28-week Rhogam or a flu shot... definitely not getting Tdap/DTaP.

I can't find anyone in real life who has lost a child to pertussis or chicken pox. I do, however, know MANY parents who have lost their children to vaccine injury. My 29-week preemie (now 10 months old) has the strongest immune system of any child I know, thanks in large part because his immune system has not been assaulted by vaccines. He's now been exposed to colds and RSV (which is deadly for many preemies) and still has never been sick a day in his life.

There are risks for any medical procedure - including vaccination - and yes, there are rare instances when people have adverse reactions to vaccines. However, if you look at the entire population of people who have gotten vaccinations, the number of people who have negative reactions is infinitesimally small in comparison. To me, the benefits FAR outweigh the risks.
And I know someone in real life who has a child who nearly died of pertussis (the child of a physician who was only partially vaccinated due to her age). She spent a month in the hospital in isolation before she was able to turn the corner.
I respect that it is your right to refuse the rhogam shot but if you need it because you're Rh- and your baby has the possibility of being RH+ due to your husband's blood type, your body can basically attack your baby's blood cells and it can be fatal to your child. Your body gets progressively more diligent about attacking those blood cells as you have more pregnancies. You seriously mean to tell me that you wouldn't get the rhogam shot if meant preserving the life of your unborn baby??

Not trying to start trouble here but if you'd like I can give you 3 Facebook pages of Moms in Oklahoma who've lost their LO's to Whooping Cough in the last year. I live here, it's an outbreak, it will spread, and its terrible. I followed these women for weeks and saw everything those poor little babies went thru before finally giving in to it. Just thought you should know those cases really exist.

The 28-week Rhogam shot is mainly as a precaution... it's post-partum Rhogam that is truly necessary, IF the baby is Rh+ and the mother is Rh-, then yes, to protect future babies, the Rhogam shot is necessary. I've had Rhogam after all my miscarriages to protect my children. However, I declined the 28-week Rhogam, ALSO to protect my children, and fully planned to get Rhogam after my baby was born, but he turned out to be Rh- (even though my husband is Rh+) so it wasn't necessary then, either.

That is absolutely tragic, and I'm heartbroken for those who have lost their children to pertussis or any illness. Of course I'm not saying no one dies from pertussis. But as a parent, I have to look at what is the greater risk. In 2011, 13 pertussis deaths occurred, according to the CDC... yet 10's of thousands of deaths and other serious reactions (e.g. seizures) occurred in the same year because of vaccines, according to VAERS (which is managed by the CDC and FDA). I have to weigh the risks and benefits and it's a clear choice to me.
That said, my risk/benefit equation would be different if I lived in an area with an outbreak (in which case I would either quarantine or consider vaccinating, if I could access a vaccine without the toxic adjuvants etc.). Each parent must decide for him/herself... I just wish more parents did actual research rather than making a decision based on emotion or blindly obeying what a man in a white coat tells them to do.

I resent the insinuation that we're vaccinating ourselves and our children because we're blindly following orders or are over-emotional. That man in a white coat has this nifty thing called a medical degree.
And the reason people are pointing out pertussis deaths is because of your anecdote about not personally knowing anybody who died from it, like that somehow negates the fact that it's happening all around you. The CDC estimates that 2 million child deaths were prevented due to vaccines in 2003. I'll take those odds.
I realize I won't change your mind on this, but please don't assume I am uninformed.
I will not be getting this vaccine or any other vaccine. Nor will we be vaccinating our daughter. Ever. Please keep your gasps and judgement to yourselves as is I don't care, for one and two I've done my research and don't judge anyone for their decisions or force my opinions or beliefs on anyone else. With that being said, whatever your decision, I do think that an informed one is always a better idea.. Here are a few articles and good luck to you and your family. I sincerely hope that everyone and their children lead happy and healthy lives.
Re: Tdap vaccine
Pertussis is on the rise. I got the vaccine, my H got it and immediate family that will be in close contact with the baby have gotten it.
