Starting Brewer's Pregnancy diet today...

First of all, I'd have started a LOT sooner but I've felt really nauseous until recently.  I've gained way too much weight already from too many carbs and not enough whole foods.  Wish me luck that this helps with the weight gain, if not I'll just be very healthy and know it's what my body need to do.  I'm just not looking forward to gaining 60lbs like last time.  If you all have any site for recipes or idea throw them in too!  I found the main site but they don't have any and I found one with meal "ideas", but that was it.   Thanks ladies!

Re: Starting Brewer's Pregnancy diet today...

  • I've been on the Brewer diet for my last two pregnancies and it didn't really help weight gain.  I've gained more this time than ever before and I'm following the diet pretty closely.  I just know that at least it's a healthy gain and not from junk.  The diet gives me and baby all of the nutrients we need, so I guess that's what matters.

For breakfast I have an egg sandwich on spelt bread (two eggs) with cheddar cheese.

Lunch is usually a big salad with more eggs, cheese, carrots, and dressing.

Dinner is a large portion of meat and a green veggie (usually broccoli or green beans) and possibly a potato.

I snack on clementine oranges and other fruits.  Also like the snack on cheese or hummus and crackers.

In the evening I will usually drink a glass of milk if I haven't had enough calcium or sometimes make a smoothie with yogurt, fruit, honey, and some peanut butter for a boost of protein and fat.

  • Yeah, my Bradley class stressed the Brewer's diet, but only as a measure to avoid pre-e - they specifically said you should gain about 40 lbs during pregnancy, which is higher than the 25-35 most women shoot for. The instructor was a big fan but gained a lot during each of her pregnancies. I tried it (I don't like eggs or milk, so it didn't work all that well for me).

Good luck, I think it's a great way to go, but don't get too down on yourself about the weight gain. FWIW, I gained 50 with DD, and I've since lost 65.

    Editted for clarity.

  • Thanks ladies.  My cousin said she gained the same with her boys, but the second she eat healthy and lost it a lot faster.  Guess I can hope for that at least!  I have today and tomorrow's meals planned out.  I guess the nice part is the snacks are healthy and for me pretty easy.  Eggs are hard for me, but I'm trying to eat them anyways.  I never like them when pregnant.  I'm hoping to get some more energy back and just feeling better.  Thanks for the adivice!  If they say 40lbs in Bradley classes, I'm half way there almost.  Yikes!

Eggs are hard for me in early pregnancy too.  I've found that the easiest way to get them in is to hard boil them and add them to salads or make egg salad sandwiches.  Sometimes it's just so hard to eat them for breakfast!

Also, I try to sneak them into food - like meatloaf, oatmeal, etc.

  • I'll have to try adding them to things like you said.  Hard boiled is the plan with lunch tomorrow in a salad.  I do have some meals planned out and it wasn't hard at all to figure out what to eat.  Really easy actually, just dinner ideas are more of a problem for me.  We're doing a "stir fry" tonight.  Not really, but we throw a bunch of veggies in with brown rice and have chicken with it.  Works for everyone.  I'll try to think of other ideas for dinners though.  Mine aren't the greatest right now.  LOL.  I'm sure it's easier than I'm thinking it is.  Maybe I'll try a meal loaf or something.

  • Pasta carbonara!  Even with wheat pasta it is pretty good!  You can get a lot of egg in that way. : )
