OB vent

I feel really bad saying this, given what happened today in Connecticut, but I am in tears right now.  I know most of it is probably pregnancy hormones, but still.  My ob cancelled my appointment this coming Monday.  She gave no reason, but the receptionist said we need to reschedule it.  I have been waiting 5 weeks for this first appointment, and on top of that, we have not told anyone yet (not even our parents) because we wanted to wait until we got our first ultrasound.  The receptionist was not sympathetic and told me I still needed to come in that week.  Except for the fact that my ob only has evening appointments on Mondays and Wednesdays, and her Wednesday evening is booked.  So that means I have to either wait until xmas eve, or the day after xmas, or another freaking week after that.  I am just so upset, and I feel like I should be a priority to these people- I'm not just some random woman getting a pap smear!

Re: OB vent

  • Call back when you're less emotional and kindly explain that since they cancelled your appointment and they insist you be seen this week, they should stay 15 minutes later Wednesday night to accommodate their own recommendations.

  • Are there other doctors in the practice? Tell her that you understand the need to reschedule, but need to be rescheduled for next week, preferably earlier in the week, and that you're willing to see anyone who is available. And that you'll wait for her to call you back with availability. Doctor's offices have to squeeze people in all the time.  But try to be nice to the reception so that she's on your side (if at all possible).

  • I'm sorry. You've gotten good advice. It could be a family emergency or something for the doctor? Heaven only knows. Call back after collecting yourself and see if they can fit you in?

Look at this sunny side up: at least when you get in there will be more to see! Good luck. I'm sure you will be ok if you have to wait, but I do understand your Dissapointment.

  • Thanks for the advice, everyone.  I managed to calm down, and I called back and rationally explained how this was my first prenatal appointment and I needed to be given an appointment on Wednesday evening.  The woman said ok but I'd be sharing an appointment with someone else.  I said ok, but does that mean that I'd be sharing a room?  (obviously not, but why was she telling me that)  So she said no, the doctor would just be extra busy.

Unfortunately, my OB has her own practice, with no other doctors there, and often times the appointments are an hour or more late.  But I am finally calm now, and I'll be going to my appointment on Wednesday.  Still kind of sucks, but it's only another two days to wait.

Thanks to you for listening and for the advice!

  • When I first called my doctor's office, the receptionist told me that the doctor wouldn't see me until after my second missed period.  I was super annoyed.  At that point, I had taken 5 HPTs - all positive.  I didn't understand why I needed to wait until my second missed period.  Luckily, she took my name and number and the other receptionist (who I've known for years) called me back and got me in earlier this week.

I don't understand why your OB isn't able to fit you in for an ultrasound.  My first appointment literally took 10 minutes - 15 at most.  I waited longer in the waiting room than I did for the actual appt.

To add to your vent, I wish my OB would've told me more at my first appt.  She asked if I had any questions and I asked what I shouldn't eat and what I shouldn't do physically.  This is my first pregnancy and I have no idea what I should be doing.  I kind of expected her to give me some sort of packet of info, but I got nothing.  I'd really rather not rely on Google - you can't believe everything you read on the internet!

Anyway, good luck!  Hope you can get in there very soon!

I'm so sorry that you had that kind of first appointment!  She definitely should have given you some paperwork!  I'm hoping that at my first appointment I will be at least getting some information, as this is also my first pregnancy.  When I called my OB 5 weeks ago to make the appointment, they also told me that we had to wait until after my second missed period.  It's kind of weird, but whatever.  I am just stressing that I am going to already be 9 weeks at my first appointment, and I will still not know if everything is ok with the LO!  I'll let you know how it goes after my first appt on Wednesday!

I agree.  Gather yourself and call back.  Let them know that you were told you needed to reschedule for this week.
