Everyone keeps saying DS looks like a girl...

For the past month or so, a handful of people at the store, museum, etc, have referred to DS as a she. I just smile and go about my business.

But lately it's getting to be more and more people. He can be dressed in the most boyish clothes and still they refer to him as a she.

It's starting to bother DH. I told him that we just have a pretty baby so people automatically think he is a girl. I suggested for him to get his hair trimmed to see if that will stave off the comments...but DH said not until he is 1.

So, how do you handle comments like that? I just smile and walk away...it's not like I am having a conversation with a stranger anyway. DH wants to yell at them...but that is a little extreme I think.

Re: Everyone keeps saying DS looks like a girl...

  • We have the opposite problem.  My DD has little hair, although she's not bald, but 9 times out of 10 people call her a boy even though she's in pink, purple ect...  I usually correct them nicely, and go about my business. People don't look at the clothing, they look at the adorable face and that's why it always happens.  I wouldn't worry about it but I would strongly suggest that your hubby doesn't yell at them.  That's plain rude IMO.

  • I usually just smile and nod. If they ask questions, I use SHE instead of HE, but the kind of people who make this mistake are usually extremely unobservant in the first place, so it doesn't make a difference.

  • Yeah, I just use the gentle correction by emphasizing the proper pronoun.  Yelling at them would just be silly.

  • I just respond with the proper pronoun too, but I also wanted so say your son totally looks like a (cute!) boy to me.

Or, say "Thanks, sir/ma'am" but insert the wrong pronoun.

    Yes

That made me laugh. I'm sure DH wouldn't really yell at anyone...atleast I hope he wouldn't...but I'll tell him this suggestion. I'm sure he'd love to do it.

  • I don't say anything or correct them if I can help it. I figure it would just be awkward and make the person feel bad. If they ask her name I just say Grant. Who cares?

  • I think he looks like a boy in your siggy!  People are always calling DD a boy.  Even if she is in pink.  Since she is bald I think it is automatic for them to call her a boy.  I usually just go with it.

  • I have the same issue!  Down to a DH who is totally ready to launch on unuspecting, trying to be kind and friendly strangers!

DD1 also had the same issue (didn't happen with my middle DD).  I finally told someone, when DD was wearing a pink and white gingham dress, with pigtails on the top of her head with big pink bows, and little white and pink shoes...

"yes, we decided to start cross dressing him very early."

Your son looks like a boy. A pretty boy, but a boy. Baby boys are always pretty. Babies are pretty. Those people are blind. I've never once looked at a photo of him and thought he looked girlish.

    Ditto to this!

  • Your son reminds me of my son every time I see your siggy.  And we get the exact same thing.  They are just incredibly beautiful!  My little man has a head of hair to die for.  So long and thick.  I try and keep his bangs out of his eyes so he looks less girlish.  I cut his bangs months ago and it was tramatic, I will not be cutting his hair for a very long time!

My husband didn't like when I would put his hair in a ponytail to keep it out of his face.  So it'll stay in his face and if he cuts my son's hair without my permission he better run and hide!
