craiglist fail - stokke tripp trapp

we're a bit tight on money this year so I looked on craiglist for a reasonablly priced tripp trapp. I made the mistake of not asking when the chair was purchased thinking all tripp trapps are the same (stupid me!!). I didn't realize this until I got the chair home that it was made in 2004 (I wish the seller told me this), which means it won't fit the stokke baby set. I know it's my fault for not doing enough research but I'm so sad. I called Stokke who told me the only option I have is to purchase a new back plate + 2 rails + harness, which will come to $120, which is what I paid for the chair :(

I just want to cry right now. I did this to save money but it ended up costing me more. To make the matter worse, I already bought the baby set on sale which can't be returned.

Does any one have an older version of the Tripp Trapp that can provide some insight on some modifications I can do so I don't need to buy another highchair for my baby before she hits 18months?  and to all the moms looking to buy a tripp trapp on craigslist to save a buck, make sure the chair is made after 2006! I just ruined my Christmas :(

Re: craiglist fail - stokke tripp trapp

  • Why not just try and re-sell it on craigslist and watch for a newer version?  In the mean time you could probably find a used high chair or high-chair seat that attaches to a regular chair for far less money, like $20 or even less.  Don't let it ruin your christmas, it's really not that bad!

  • Thanks! Guess my only option is to sell it.  Thanks Jane :) I do need to step back and realize it's not the end of the world

  • I have two tripp trapps and never used the baby set with it. Ours have a harness and my kids were able to use it by 6-7 months, once they were sitting reliably. It was never a problem and at 5 and 3 they're still using it.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience Penguingirl, did you have the 3 point or 5 point harness? Did you feel there was enough support for them to safely sit with just the harness?

  • Mine is a 5 point harness. It was slightly unstable at 6 months in that they would sometimes slump over, but there was no way they could fall out of the chair. And they moved past that stage into sitting perfectly stably in it very, very quickly. I never had any accessories with mine (no baby seat portion, no tray or anything) and never missed it (in fact, part of the appeal of that seat was that there was no tray and they would sit at the table with the rest of the family).

  • Worst comes to worse keep it and get an Ikea Antilop for the start. That's what we're going to do this time around, Ikea until 12 months and then Trip Trap for 1st birthday.

DD stopped using the baby set and harness shortly after her first birthday because she would climb up onto it and it was dangerous for her to have it on there.

  • Do not even consider modifying it! It defeats the purpose if you make changes to it that may not be safe.
  • I also got the older version of the Tripp Trapp not realizing they had changed it but I got it at a thrift store for about $20 so I didnt feel to bad when I realized.  One of the parts of the buckle was broken but we found a third party three point buckle we are planning on replacing it with for a few dollars online.  Honestly from what I have read they used the three point harness un Europe with out the baby set or anything from 6months on with out any issue for years before Stokke came out with the baby set and all the newer accessories.  Our baby is not due for another 3 months so I cant say how the baby will do in the three point harness for sure but we also picked up one of those hook onto the table highchairs for when we go to family's homes for dinner so I figure if the baby seems unstable in the three point harness we will use that at our house until it can use the tripp trapp as intended.  Dont over think it and sell your baby set.
  • My mom used this for my youngest sister when she was about a year old...back in 1993 and she had no problems with it!!
