Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Going to the movies

I've been to the movies before during which someone brought their baby with them. Not only did the baby cry at some point (I wanted to run and hug the little guy) but I thought it was incredibly loud for an infant. However, I've seen this trend a bit. I would prefer to leave my child at home or have a movie night at home with the baby. However, I was curious to know if any of you take your infants to the theater and at what age you thought it acceptable.

Re: Going to the movies

  • We were VERY worried about it as well. And didn't take LO to any movies until wreck it Ralph came out. We all went as a big family. Us and all of our inlaws. She fell asleep.

And then just a few days ago we went to see rise of the guardians. And I fed her some peas and again she slept through the whole thing. I am sure not all babies are like this bit she seems to not even care about the movie one bit. She turns 7 months Tomorrow. I am sure there has to be something where it must be too loud but it doesn't seem to bother our LO one bit.

  • No way would I bring my baby to a movie.  Movies are expensive, and it's unfair to the other people who paid to see the movie to have to hear a baby crying throughout.  And it's not fair to the baby either.  Maybe you'll get lucky and the child will sleep, but what if that doesn't happen?  Not a good situation, imo.

  • We have a dollar theater here and I have debated taking my daughter to a movie there before, but I doubt she'd stay quiet the entire time and I think I'd be frustrated if she made me miss the ending! lol

  • I wouldn't; not only is it rude for other patrons, but the volume is probably too loud for the baby.

The only exception I can see would be a very young baby who sleeps most of the time, especially if the baby is EBF and the mom can't leave the house without him/her. Even then, I'd worry about the volume level.

this!  maybe get some baby ear muffs!

  • We went to a family movie when my LO was a few months old.  He was breastfed at the time and still slept a fair amount so I latched him on and he fell asleep the whole time.  I don't think I would take him now though because he may get cranky and I don't BF anymore to just latch him on so he would fall asleep.  Overall, past the newborn stage I wouldn't take my LO to a movie until the age of 2 or 3 years and even that might not work, depends on your child.

  • I wouldn't take my newborn or even 12 month old to the movies, they could cry the whole time, have a meltdown, anything, which would be rude to people who are there trying to watch...not to mention it's too expensive to possibly have to leave in the middle of the movie because baby is not happy.  We took my oldest daughter when she was about 2.5 and that was just about right...she could enjoy the movie and I didn't have to worry about her freaking out or crying and ruining it for anyone

  • Babies should NOT be in the theatre. Unless it is one of those mom shows.

i agree with this one. most times in the theater, i do hear other kids/babies crying, i think my LO may be an exception. from the day she was born, she could sleep through anything.

  • I took DD to a 12pm viewing of Thomas the Train. Her big brother REALLY wanted to see it. I was so nervous she would disrupt things, but it was low volume and she didn't make a peep. The other kids in the theater were out of control.

I wouldn't bring a baby or a toddler to a regular adult movie. It's too loud, and I would be humiliated if they started crying during the show.

This.  Movies are not a place to bring babies.  DH and I rarely go to the movies but we do go for the big movies (ie. Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, etc.)  Anyway, when we went to see the last Harry Potter someone had their baby there and the baby was crying on and off throughout the whole movie.  Not fair.

  • We bring DS to the movies ONLY when it's a kid movie like Finding Nemo or Wreck it Ralph. He never makes a peep and actually watches the movie.

I would never bring him to any adult movies though! I cringe and get ticked when I see parent's bring their kids into rated R movies.
