Babies: 0 - 3 Months

11lbs.

I've both read and heard that babies sleep longer stretches once they hit 11 lbs. I think I heard its something with their metabolism? In your experience, is there any truth to this or is it just another old wives take?

Re: 11lbs.

  • I have never heard this, but it is true in my case.  My daughter was 10lbs, 11oz at her 2 month appointment.  About a week later she started sleeping about 9 hours a night.

  • My LO has always been an extreme sleeper (not really a good thing in our case) but the Dr didn't want me letting her go more than 6 hrs between feeds until she was 11 pounds - so there must be something behind that!

Luckily, she hit that right before I went back to work at 12 weeks. I am fine getting up when she wakes up but I hated getting up to my alarm!

  • I've heard this too! My friend who has a three month old told me this snd said she read it in What to Expect the First Year...

Hope it's true! Was true for her!

  • I sure wish it was true, or at least it isn't in our case.  DS is a little over 12 lbs and still wakes every 1.5-2 hours at night to eat and eats every 2 hours during the day as well.  I have heard that sleeping gets better once they reach 6 weeks though.

Wow, is your baby under 6 weeks and over 12 pounds?  My kid is 10 weeks and only about 11 pounds!  He's a little guy though.

  • I never heard of that or how true it is. My son was 11lbs 3oz at his one month check. About that time he started sleeping 4-6hr stretch at night. Right now his sleeping routine is 5hrs (10pm-3am), nurse, sleep 4hrs (3:30-7:30am), nurse, sleep about another hour or so and then up for awhile. He was born 8lbs 2oz and left the hospital at 7lbs 4oz -- we were slow with breastfeeding. His average growth rate has been 1lb and 1/2inch a week.

My son was 11 Ibs at his 1 month check up too, which shocked me because he isnt a big baby, I guess hes just heavy lol. But sadly he will only sleep 1-2 hours at a time :( youre so lucky lol

  • I've read that it becomes physically possible for babies to sleep through the night at 11 lbs, but that doesn't mean that they will. :) I was lucky and mine started sleeping long stretches right around when she hit 11 lbs.
  • My baby is about 10 weeks old, and he hit the 11 pound mark about 2 or 3 weeks ago. He actually stopped sleeping through the night at around that time. I'm not sure why though.

  • My baby is two months today and is round 11lbs I believe (was 10.6lbs before 8 weeks and that was over a week ago)

What I find frustrating is all of a sudden she's sleeping in much smaller stretches during the day now. Went from like one and a half hour to like 20-25 minutes. With maybe 6 hours straight during the night.

  • Never heard of this...my 13 week old DS is 11lbs&15 ounces. He's a small little guy. He only sleeps max 5 hours at night then up ever 2 to 3 hours to eat! During the day lately he's been going longer stretches sometimes..he's typically every 2 hours during day!
  • I think this is true.  My daughter was 9 lbs 6 oz at birth, and she's about 12 lbs now.  She sleeps through the night already!

  • Not true in my case. DS2 is over 11 lbs. and still nurses every 2 hours, even through the night.

  • My DD just hit the 11lb mark at 12 weeks.  She has been a great sleeper from the beginning doing 6-8 hour stretches since 6 weeks old.
  • Ha I wish! Lol. My big guy is 8 weeks old and almost 13 pounds and still nurses through out the night every 1.5-4 hours and eats every 2-2 1/2 hours during the day
  • My DS is 11 lbs and still wakes mostly every hour with one three hour stretch if I'm lucky.
