BCBS & Pumps?!?!

Hey Ladies,

I am just wondering how does this work?  I called BCBS about getting a pump and they said that I had to meet certain qualifications like premature birth or baby in NICU.  Well I called my Pedi and got the premature diagnosis code for my baby since he was a preemie and they said thats not enough.  I'm going back to work soon and I need this to be taken care of.  Please give me some guidance and advice!! I appreciate it.

  • I would say call back your insurance company and just keep asking to speak to a supervisor. You could also ask if they have anyone in maternal care managment that might help coordinate care for new moms on the plan.

WTF? I have BCBS and didn't meet any requirements at all (LO was born at 40w3d, perfectly healthy), I asked the nurse for a pump, just because I wanted one, she brought me a Medela PISA to take home, four months later we got a bill from the hospital, BCBS had covered 90% of the pump. There has to be some other way to get them to cover it???

  • I'm thinking all plan are different. I also have BCBS and they would only cover a single manual pump, so I had to buy my own PISA.

  • My bcbs paid for a pump through a medical supply company that made the whole process easy. They contacted my Obgyn for me and obtained the necessary paperwork and prescriptions. I think the place was referred to me by the insurance company. They sent me a medela double electric pump very similar to the Pisa but the more basic wic version for 20 out of pocket.
