Toddlers: 24 Months+

Very Busy 2 year old boy

Little man is NOT at all interested in craft type things, not so much into books....he just wants to play and explore all day which I do love b/c i feel thats how he learns a great deal...BUT i am a stay at home mom and sometimes I need a little "me" time throughout the week. I do allow him to watch tv here and there but try to do that only when im doing something productive so he doesnt get into it HA! Any tips/ideas to help get him a little more interested in some more 'down time' type play/activities?

TIA!

  • I'm seeing that my 19 month old is exactly like that EXCEPT he won't watch tv...AT ALL.  Like not even 5 minutes.  Sometimes I just need a little "break" and feel the same way as you.

No ideas except to exhaust them and get a good nap LOL

What type of play is he currently interested in?  Does he play independently at all?  I find I can start an activity with DS for maybe 5 minutes and sometimes he will continue it on his own for another 10 minutes or something.  I would just keep encouraging him to play independently, but part of that unfortunately is personality.  My mom said my sis had to always be entertained, where I played by myself a lot.

The only other me times I can think of are nap time, babysitter, or sometimes its nice to get out of the house/ go for a walk or talk to other moms. Yeah you still are chasing your kid if you do a kid group activity but its nice to commiserate with other moms, and if you do a walk you can put the kid in the stroller and not chase after them.

    anything cars and trucks hahah

he does play independently from time to time, Thank God but most of the time he'd like me playing with him. he's such a good boy but just SO busy hahah I just wish he would sit still for more then 2 mins lol

  • My foster son was active too. I would sit him on a towel on the kitchen with a large bowl or pan of water and a washcloth and he would 'clean' his trains and cars. It would give me a nice 30 minute break :)
  • I'll admit my son loves to play on his Dad's tablet so i do let him do that for a few minutes at a time.  Also he loves to get up on a chair, stand at the sink and "wash dishes"--he runs his plastic dishes under the water.  I let him do this sometimes when I am making dinner since I am right there to monitor him.
  • LO is big into dumping and pouring and refilling things. I have a bunch of different manipulatives (small plastic bugs, cars, colorful erasers, dried beans, pompoms, water beads, etc) that I put in her sensory table/tupperware bin along with cups, scoopers, and spoons. That keeps her content for a while.

  • My daughter is non-stop also.  She does like to craft, but only with things that require me to be right there with her typically.  I have done sensory things (rice, oatmeal, etc.) with her, but she doesn't play with it long enough for me to feel all of the clean up time is worth it, lol.  She loves to play at the sink with sudsy water (always do this on towel laundry day :)).  I have some toys put away in baskets and take them out periodically.  There are things like puppets, puzzles, lacing boards, blocks, magnets with a baking pan, memory games, anything really.  What about bathtub play?  Shaving cream, or bath paints.  Safety scissors with straws (when you already need to sweep).  Masking tape roads on the floor.  Take all of the cushions off the floor and let him climb on them.  Give him a balloon and a paper plate glued to a popsicle stick to bop around.  Print pictures and stick them all over to go on a hunt (I do letters or shapes sometimes).  Playdough.  Velcro dots on jumbo popsicle sticks.  Have him "clean" with a towel and a spray bottle full of water.
