Dumb question, but: What happens if my water breaks...

...in the shower?? Will I know I've sprung a leak or would it just feel as though warm water is running down my legs as how a shower might feel? Just thought of that an hour ago in the shower...I'm 36 weeks and 1 day!!

  • I'm sure you'd figure it out after your shower when you just couldn't dry off. :)

  • it does not break and stop flowing. it will continue to leak. Plus you do not want to rush off to the hospital that second, wait until the contractions are 4 minutes apart and approx. 1 minute long.

Unless you don't contract at all, which is what happened to me. But yeah, you don't need to rush off to the hospital that second. I headed to L&D about 4 hours after my water broke.

If your water breaks in the shower, it will continue leaking when you get out. You'll know. I was standing in a pool of liquid.

We were told in our birth class that if your water breaks you should be at the hospital within 2 hours, if not sooner, regardless if you are having contractions or not. My mom's water broke with me and she didn't have contractions at all so waiting at home for contractions might not be the best idea.

Same thing happened with my Mom when she was pregnant with me. Her water broke at home, she didn't have any contractions but went to the hospital right away, and then I was born about three hours later.

    yep, it doesn't stop flowing.

but I am required to go to the hospital immediately. You need to ask your doctor what he requires of you if your water breaks.

  • Since I am strep b + if my water is to break on it's own I have to in right then and there. If not I would so hang out at home at least an hour or 2.
