Babies: 9 - 12 Months

getting 12month old off bottles?

i need advice!! my daughter went to her 12 month well check up today. Her doctor suggested getting her off bottles now. and just do it cold turkey. Anyone ever cut them cold turkey? she wakes up first thing in the morning and is use to getting a bottle. as well as after bath and before bed i give her one last bottle to go to sleep!! Do i let her cry it out? Also we have introduced sippy cups..she only takes the straw kind the best. and will only use it during meal times. other than that she has no interest. HELP!!!!!!-

Re: getting 12month old off bottles?

  • i don't know what the rush is ... my older son had a bottle until he was 19 months old, and by then he was ready to give them up, and it wasn't a big deal, but it might have been a bit jarring if we did cold turkey at 12 months.

just my 2 cents, but they really are babies for such a short period of time ... why rush ???

  • I started by using the Nuk cups which had the silicone spouts. I held her as if I was giving her a bottle. We tried that first then switched to giving her a sippy full of water at meal times. They will play with it for a while, I don't think she quite got the hang of it till closer to 13 months.

  • My girls dont care for sippy cups at all yet...so I for sure will not be cutting out bottles cold turkey at 12 months.  I'm even planning to keep them on formula a little longer as well since they still eat mostly purees and not enough solids though.

This. We did the same type of cups because of DC not giving bottles at the toddler room and she liked it, so we just ditched the bottles...She didn't even complain. She has been drinking water in a straw cup since 6 months old. but I felt bad to give her milk in a straw cup, with the soft spout cup she can drink like a bottle.

  • thanks guys. I thought the same.. Why rush. I have introduce the straw ones bc she only takes those ones the best. we have tried all sorts of cups. I will ease into it afterall she is my only baby and she has already turned one on me too fast !:)

  • my pedi doesn't think you need to have them off by 12 months...by 12 months my LO was getting all sippies during the day...a few weeks after her 1st birthday I started to try and cut out the last two bottles and she was fine with not having one at bedtime..the morning one lingered until 14.5 months...she woke up and didn't ask for it so that was that! this time my LO is still being nursed in the morning and night and I think its going to be tough to ween her at bedtime....She's almost on all sippies during the day...

  • I asked our doctor about this at my daughter's 12 month appt yesterday. Right now, my daughter will not drink milk out of a sippy. She'll drink water, but not milk. He told me that the way to do it, is to just stop offering her bottles and water and to keep offering her milk. He assured me that she will eventually drink the milk and she will not get dehydrated. We're going to finish the last bit of formula we have, and then I'm going to give it a try.

I agree.  Our son in 15 months and gets a bottle in the morning, sippys with milk and water during the day, and then a bottle after his bath, then we hold him a bit and lay him down.  He doesn't use the bottle to fall asleep so I'm in no rush to get rid of it despite what seems to be the norm.  He'll let me know when he doesn't want it anymore, and it's not harming him in anyway, only giving him some comfort.

I'd wean if your LO needs it to fall asleep, and also practice with a sippy cup during the day.  But don't stress about it.  I was so scared thinking I needed to give it up at 12 mos and then I really pondered it and decided to keep  giving it.
