Pregnant after 35

2nd ultrasound this morning

Went this morning for my 2nd ultrasound and I have mixed feelings.  1st gestational sac is showing a fetal pole, no heartbeat yet but that will probably be visible next week, it's still a bit early.  2nd sac is still empty, so I am sad about that, I was so sure there would be a yolk sac today.

What is bothering me the most is that last week they were both measuring 5 weeks 2 days, this week the 1st sac is measuring 5 weeks 6 days, so to me that seems like it's very slow.  Hopefully I will feel better once I hear a good beta number this afternoon!

I know I should focus on the fact that fetal pole is visible, but I clearly have a problem where I need to worry about something.   Side effect from this IF process I'm afraid. I apologize for the Debbie Downer tone to this post, I probably should have waited to post until a little later.

TTC since 3/2010. Me 41, DH-49. After 3 years, 6 IUIs and several IVFs we have finally have our beautiful baby girl, born on 11/7/13.

Re: 2nd ultrasound this morning

  • I think IF makes us expect the worst.  The measurements at this stage are so imprecise because 1mm can make a difference that being "off" by a few days doesn't mean much.  You could have three doctors or u/s techs look on the same day and come up with three different readings.  Hopefully the beta will give you some comfort.  Hang in there!

Yes, this. Ultrasound is pretty accurate, but at this stage, 1 mm can make a big difference in the gestational age it calculates. I am sorry to hear that the second sac doesn't have a fetal pole. I suppose if you end up with just a singleton pregnancy, your betas might not accelerate as fast as they did before, but FX that you get a nice number. It is basically impossible not to worry and I feel for you!

  • I've been there so I know how hard it is to NOT worry! But I didn't see much of anything at 5+ weeks, not even a fetal pole, but a week later everything was exactly as it should be, things change really really fast at that stage and sometimes the structures are literally just too small to pick up on the u/s. Try not to worry, or google!

  • Thank you so much for the support and the understanding. I really appreciate it. Crazy what a difference a millimeter can make!

I did hear back from my nurse and she set my mind at ease a bit about the measurement, plus my beta went up in a week from 3400 to 12,584.  She also said my E2 was up from 108 to 604, and that although it's not a guarantee, if there was something seriously wrong, the E2 would have dropped. So all in all, I should stop worrying. That is until I go back next Wednesday :)

She also said that usually a heartbeat is visible once the beta reaches 15,000 so next week we should see that.

  • It's ok to post about worry :) I think the growth is so varied in those early weeks its hard to count on anything. FX for a great beta!

    FX for a good beta.

It's impossible not to worry. Don't beat yourself up about that.

    All of this. GL!

  • I saw your BFP news on the TTC after 35 board and wanted to wish you luck. When I was pregnant with my DS something similar happened with his heartbeat. At my first Ultrasound they said we should hear the heartbeat, but all we saw was the fetal pole. I was convinced we would lose him, but the next week we went back and he was beating nice and strong! Sometimes the timing is just a bit off.  I almost wish they wouldn't tell us what we "should" expect and just wait to see what happens.  Needless to say my DS is now a VERY active 3 year old. Sending good thoughts and vibes your way!

  • It's impossible not to worry. I didn't even get to see what was going on in an ultrasound until 7 weeks, since they could see the heartbeat by then. I just think it's really hard to tell much that early on.

Thinking of you and wishing you all the best!

  • I'm so glad you got a great beta update!  I know it is impossible not to worry.  The entire first tri is just so hard and I don't think there is a way around that.  I hope you have a heartbeat or two at your next u/s.  Good luck!

  • Sorry I hear about the second sac. Try your best to not worry about the other. I know it's hard. For what it's worth, my first us measured 6 weeks 2 days, 7 days later it measured 6 weeks 4 days, 4 days after that 6 weeks 6 days. Neither of my docs were worried. Yesterday, which was 4 days after the last ultrasound the baby measured 8 weeks 1 day! So, it's been all over the place. As long as things are movig forward, I would remain positive. Best of luck!

  • Everything that pps said plus this:

Having a child means worrying for the rest of our lives about them. Just like not sleeping well during pregnancy is preparation for not sleeping well once the baby arrives, worrying now might as well be "practice" so that we'll be experts at it by the time they're born!

Hang in there and soon you'll be moving on to the next item about which to worry!
