when did your lo give up night time diapers?

My ds is 3 1/2...he'll be 4 end of March. He's been potty trained for a year now and is still wearing night time diapers to bed. Most mornings he wakes up pretty wet. I'm wondering if he's wetting them because he knows he has a diaper on? Our Ped. said when he was ready he would either wake up to go to the bathroom or wake up because he doesn't like the feel of being wet...this was last March when she told me this. Any suggestions?

Re: when did your lo give up night time diapers?

  • Our 4+ year old is still wearing pull-ups to bed.  I would say they are wet 50% of the time.  He gets upset about it so I know he wants to stay dry.  On the mornings he is dry, he immediately goes to the bathroom.

I am not going to push the issue. He expresses in interest in staying dry and feel I will only discourage him if have him wear underwear to bed.  He gets extremely upset when he does have an accident.  From what I have read, not everyone is physically capable of staying dry until a certain age which varies from child to child.

My only suggestion is to let it happen with some encouragement along the way!

  • Our 5-y-o just today had her last pull-up. Kids will develop this at their own pace. You can encourage him to try to give up what we called "nighttime underwear," but if his body isn't ready, it's not ready.

How much water is he drinking right before bed? Some people also suggest waking the child up in the middle of the night to encourage him to go. We mostly just waited until DD was ready. We bought her a calendar and gave her a star every time she was dry in the morning. It's very  important not to shame them, though.

  • My oldest started staying dry at 4 yrs old, my youngest can drink an entire cup of h2o before bed and still stay dry and has since he was 2 and a half... my almost 5 yr old is not ready yet. We encourage him, but his body is not ready. He wakes up wet almost every morning... trust me he wants to wake up dry... he is just not ready. Relax, he is still young.

  • DD#1- 3.5

DS- 2y,4mo (the minute he decided to potty train he wouldn't let me put a diaper on him.

DD#2- still going strong.  She will do it in her own time, I imagine- like everything else!

  • DS potty trained just after his 3rd bday. We actually just put him in underwear from the get go for day and night. He's never peed the bed. I would try putting him in underwear at night and see how he does. Limit fluid for 1-2 hours before bed, have him go to the bathroom just before he goes down and see how he does!

    GL!

  • my girls are 3.5 and still in diapers at nite...they were day trained around their 3rd bday....one wakes up dry 80% of the time...but the other has only woken up dry maybe twice...whenever they ask to wear underwear at nite, they wet the bed...we are not quite there yet, and not pushing them either...
  • Listen to your pedi.  Day time and night time when it comes to the potty have nothing to do with each other.  You can't train someone to be night trained, when his body is ready, it will happen.

My older DD actually night trained 1st at around 2 years 9 months and she was totally day trained a few weeks later although we had her sleep in a pull up for a few months just in case.

DD #2 was what I would consider more normal for potty training.  She day trained at around age 3 (although she showed interest at 16 months, she refused to poop on the potty until around age 3).  Night time - she was close to 4 when she finally was ready to go without a pull up.  She would wake up soaked and never wake up to pee.  A few months at most she started waking up dry more than wet but still never woke up to pee.  One Sat morning just before her 4th birthday she told me was done with night time pull ups and would start getting up to go potty and she has.  I think in the almost year since she has only had 1 night time accident.  She was ready so it happened.

I don't believe that waking your child when you go to bed or limiting liquids does a thing - if they are not ready, its not going to make a difference.

  • My DD turned 4 on Monday and she's in nightime pull ups for the forseeable future.  She wakes up wet 75% of the time - soaked in fact.  I think she pees a lot in the early morning right around 5 or 6.  I've tried waking her up and walking her to the potty a handful of times before I go to bed around 11 or midnight and she never pees then.

  • DS is 5.5 and still in night time diapers.  He was day trained at 2 years 9 months.
  • Ohh, I'm wondering the same thing!  Our DS turned 3 in September.  He's been daytime trained since last February, but whenever I urge him to try to keep his diaper dry during a nap, he just can't do it.  I'd love to hear some techniques for getting him completely trained.  I know he hates having to wear a diaper, but he still seems to need one.

  • I waited till DS asked to wear underwear at night.  He had been dry for about 6 months.  It was around his 4th birthday.

She still had very occassional accidents until she was 9.

  • DS is the same age as OP. We stopped overnight pullups about 2 months ago. We probably could have done it a month or 2 sooner but I was not ready. We did it when DS was waking up dry more often then not. Also we used stickers as a reward since he always pooped in the pull up even though I knew he could on the potty he always pooped in his diaper at nap and in the am since he was a baby. You could try a reward system to see if he can keep dry.

  • My ds at 3 was still waking up very wet every morning even leaking through diapers. Then one day he refused to let me put a diaper on him. I said okay but if he had an accident we would go back to diapers. He went 2 weeks before he had an accident. He has had 3 accidents in a year. When their ready not much you can do to rush it.

  • Our 4.5 year old still wears pullups at night. I wake him at 11 to pee and he is still very wet in the morning. I would love to see him "hold it" all night but he is healthy and from what I have read I can't rush this.

  • I have not read other posts. DS was potty trained at 26 months for day time. He was 4y2m before he started waking up dry consistently. We moved during that time and both pediatricians said it was not a concern until age 6. We tried limiting his liquid between dinner and bed and it didn't make a difference so we just waited until he was ready.

  • DS turned 4 last month and still wears a pull up.  He's dry 50% of the time and sometimes he's soaked the bed.  He also has a half cup of milk at bedtime.  I don't know if we'll bite the bullet and cut them out or wait a bit longer...

  • DD1 started waking up at night to pee right after she turned 6. Prior to that, she just slept way too heavily. Anytime she fell asleep in the car, and we forgot to put her goodnite on, she ended up waking up wet in the morning. She could be in a soaking wet bed, and it didn't even wake her up. She was day time potty trained at 2.5 years.

I'd just keep using diapers at night until he's consistently dry.

  • DD just stopped wearing a diaper to bed about 2 months ago.  She'll be 3 next month.  We got her up once n the night up 'till about 2 weeks ago when we told her we weren't going to wake her anymore.  She's had one accident in 2 weeks.

  • My daughter was officially out of night pullups about 3 weeks ago. She turned 4 in Oct.  At her 4 year check-up, the doctor told her to start wearing undies underneath her pullup (not overtop).  So she heard that and didn't argue us when we put undies on first.  Took 3 nights before she decided she was done with the pullups.
  • My one twin started wearing panties to bed when she was 3 1/2. My other twin is still wearing pullups to bed and they are almost 4 1/2. Each kid is different and you just have to wait until they are ready which for some kids is later. She asked to wear panties to bed about 4 months ago and we gave it a try and she stayed dry the first 2 nights. On night 3 she soaked herself and the bed. I expected an accident in the beginning but when she did completely soak herself she slept the whole night that way, it didn't wake her at all. So since she couldn't even feel she was that wet in her sleep, I knew she was not ready. When her twin went to panties she did have 2 accidents in the beginning, but it woke her up and she woke me to clean up.

I expect sometime in the next year we will be out of pullups at night because half the time she is waking up dry, but I am not going to push her.

  • It totally depends on the kid. Both boys were potty trained at 2426 months old. DS1 will be 4 years old next week and he wets his pullup every night. DS2 is 2.5 years old and he only wore a pullup for one night and never wets the bed!
  • So glad I am not alone. Our DD will be 4 next month and is still wet about 80-90% of the time in the mornings. On some days she actually wakes in the middle of the night soaked through her overnight diaper :/ I was thinking about talking with the pediatrician when we see him next month for our son's well baby visit but since it seems to be semi-normal maybe I'll just research more.
