My sitter did it and hers turned out awesome. You need around 3 people to help you if your baby is anything like mine. LO thought it was awesome to stick her hand in and then ball up her fist and check out the texture of stuff. It was hilarious. I have no idea how my sitter got her perfect little handprint other than that she told me there were 3 people who helped her.
FWIW, we were gifted a casting kit which I thought was really bizarre, but we cast her feet and they're the cutest things ever. I painted them and then turned them into Christmas ornaments--one for us and one for my Mom.
I'd suggest using salt dough. Its much cheaper and easier. And if you mess up it's no biggie. I used this recipe and was able to make 7 foot ornaments from it!
We did it with her foot. Then after we baked and cooled it, I painted the footprint red and the rest of it green with acrylic paint then sprayed it with a high gloss acrylic spray paint. Got those things from hobby lobby, but prob available at Walmart? They turned out super cute! It's what we are giving to grandparents for Christmas too.
I did this recipe. They turned out okay. If I did it again I'd make sure they are nice & smooth before cooking, and my edges are clean & straight. I was able to sand them down to make it look nice but it would have been easier if I paid more attention to the detail before baking it.
I just did a circle w/ DS's footprint, and a circle w/ DD's handprint. I then put glue in the footprint, and sprinkled blue glitter in it. Also, I tried to write the date w/ a toothpick before baking it...fail! You can't read it. It's better to just write on it with a sharpie marker.
Overall I'm happy with them. I tried the salt ornaments a couple of weeks ago & ended up throwing them away. They got a lot of air pockets and looked awful.
I did salt dough hand and foot prints from a recipe I found on Pinterest. My mom helped out by holding DS' hand and foot open so that we could press it into the dough. It took me forever to get them fully baked/hardened, but then I painted them with green acrylic paint and they look pretty cute.

Ok, we made them with the salt dough... No problem getting her hand open, and I got a bunch of hand and footprints, but the recipe I used made the dough take in some air, so some of the prints bubbled up. I think we still have a few good ones though, so DD and I will be off to get some acrylic paint for the decorating.

I just made my first salt dough ornaments. I used 1 cup salt, 2 cups flour, and 1.5 cups water. I haven't painted the ones I made footprints with but I did paint a star ornament and it came out very cute
Re: Clay handprint ornaments
Ive used the kits before with my first and I'll offer a couple tips to save your sanity
1. Make sure your start with clean hands (lint etc will stick to it)
2. Do it when they are sleeping since it really hard to get their little hands open and cooperate
I did it.
It was stupid.

ETA Yeah I'm a dumaass. I just clicked your link and saw it is salt dough and not actually clay. Ignore me please thank you!
EDIT: we used salt clay.
I've made the cornstarch baking soda dough and I am hoping to do hand prints tonight. I hear the cornstarch dough is alot smoother than salt dough.
