Trying to Get Pregnant

Hold pee for OPK?

I am on my first cycle ttc and using OPKs.  I ordered them from Amazon and they came with ZERO instructions.

So far from this board I have gathered to NOT test with FMU, test twice a day...possibly three if you are getting close to possitives.  (I am) and my question is ....

I have seen the advice given to women who are going to use a pregnancy in the afternoon to wait at least 4 hours and them test.  Should this advice be taken for OPKs too?  I ask bc I pee every 2 hours and would need to "hold" it.  Very doable just wondering if it is needed?

Re: Hold pee for OPK?

  • others can feel free to chime in but I don't think you have to hold it for an opk. At least not that long. I think you can just go when you normally do.

btw I like your wedding dress! Very cute.

Also you can try testing twice a day at first but a lot of people are able to get a positive testing only once a day so you might find you can save money that way. I in fact had positives over two days this cycle.

  • Don't take my opinion as fact... But I have read before that your pee should be more dilluted when doing OPKs.  My guess would be because we always produce LH, so a surge could be predicted better with dilluted urine.  Personally, I use midstream FMU, but also test with dilluted urine twice more in the afternoon and evening. GL!

  • I normally hold it for 4 hours, but that's because I never get a dark line, so if I only hold for 2 hours it doesn't seem to work as well.  It may not be needed though.

Thank you for the advice I think I will just go as needed.  I have neevr put this much thought into pee before ;) HaHa!!

Thank you!  We just went to the courthouse on our anniversary and I was kinda upset with myself for spending $750 on the dress so my plan was to sell it......but I got attached and I am sure it will live in the back of my closet forever :)

  • I would stop drinking liquids 3 hours before I would take my OPK and make sure I used the bathroom at that time so I had 3 hours of pee built up.

  • OP, you may want to check out peeonastick.com. Lots of great information.  LH is synthesized in the morning but is not metabolized until later in the day. Most OPKs recommend to not use FMU and  to test in the afternoon.  As far as how many times a day you should test, it depends on your body.  Some people are able to catch their surge with testing only once a day and some people need to test multiple times a day because they only catch their surge in the 12 hours leading up to O.

  • I just asked my doctor about this when I went to see her for a fertility check up this month.  She said to test FMU. My friend's fertility doc told her to test FMU and before bed...
  • The instructions that came with my OPKs said to test between 10 AM and 8 PM, and to restrict fluids in the 2 hrs before taking the test. I try to wait at least 2 hrs, though sometimes I only last 1.5!

This is what my OPK's say as well, I never got a positive OPK until I followed the advice of waiting 4 hours and not drinking too many fluids during the wait and it worked.  This is my second month of getting positive OPK's using this method and I discovered that I've been ovulating a lot later in my cycle than I had previously thought.  Good luck OP!
