Nosy person at work... your opinion?

So I was put in a really awkward position yesterday afternoon.  A woman who works on my floor basically cornered me and asked me if I was pregnant, but said didn't have to answer if I didn't want to.  Well this is awkward, especially since I havne't made the announcement to my boss yet, and I'm not even close to this woman! WTF?!  Plus the way she asked me I couldn't lie... so I told her the truth, and that I was planning on telling my boss next Monday.  When I asked her how she guessed (I'm not really showing yet) she said she noticed that I was "glowing".  Anyway,so weird... and now I'm nervous that she will say something before I do next week since she is friends with my boss! Ughh... I can't stand nosy people...

  • Hopefully she will respect your privacy and keep the secret until you are ready to tell everyone.  That sure takes A LOT of nerve to come up and ask someone that question!

  • Two of my coworkers knew/suspected and I had a feeling they did, but knew they would never ask me directly.  Once I told my boss Tuesday, they told me they knew because of my acne (seriously, when does that go away) and constant eating.  Didn't make me feel great, but at least they knew better enough than to ask me.

Your coworker sounds nosy for sure, and had it been me, and by the way I am the world's worst liar, I would have said no and left her to find out like everyone else later.

  • If it was me, I would tell my boss today. You don't want to take the chance that he/she might hear it from this busybody. That being said, what a total b!tch! I will never understand why people think it is appropriate to corner someone like that and ask them if they are pregnant! If you haven't been told then either there is no baby or they don't want you to know yet! I am so sorry this happened to you. That woman deserves a big old throat punch.

  • I've had three people at work as me if I was pregnant, and two people ask my boss if I was. Good thing my boss has known since six weeks, lol.

My boss is currently out of town, but still working online.  I wanted to tell him face to face and not over email or instant message.  That is why I'm waiting until Monday.  I also wanted the weekend to really come up with a game plan (how long to take leave, etc) because my boss is the type of guy to ask right away!  I would never, ever ask someone such a personal question like that... especially if I don't know them very well.  Its no one's business but my own!  I thought about lying to her, but it would be out in the open next week so I gave in.  The way she asked the question really didn't leave room to lie anyway... people just suck!

Acne and overeating could be PMS too... sheesh!  So they didn't call you out, but they spoke behind your back instead... can't win!

That's incredibly rude.  That said, I would just tell your boss.  Cat's out of the bag and it's better that he/she hear from you IMO. Unless you have a real reason for waiting, but even then I'd rather be sure I was the one to break the news.

They asked your BOSS?!  That's pretty effing ballsy.

Yup. One asked before I had given the okay that it wasn't a secret anymore so my boss just said she was not aware of anything (even though she was). The second asked last week once I was officially out to my dean (my boss's boss) so she confirmed it. It's not a secret, but I don't feel the need to go around and give everyone a play by play of what's going on in my ute.

That makes sense. I hope she keeps her big pie hole shut until Monday when you get to tell your boss!
