Natural Birth

LMFAO...the joke was on me!

I called my insurance regarding some prenatal testing stuff and confirmed one more time that they won't cover anything from my out of network midwives. No, no coverage. I asked if my expenses for out of network could count towards my deductible in 2013 because they don't have any home birth options in network and it turns out they do! My insurance covers home birth with in-network Certified Nurse Midwives.

I'm thinking, 'wow,' as much as I love my midwives I need to check this out. I could save $2500 if I went in-network. The gal from the ins. even sent me the list of all the CNMs within my area. Great! I started calling them. There was a list of 34 midwives that were CNMs and in network, 8 or 9 different clinics. Guess how many do home births...a big fat ZERO!!!

I couldn't help but laugh my fat arse off. They don't really cover home birth if none of their providers are willing to do them. It was a freaking wild goose chase.

I'm so glad I looked into it, I'd kick myself if I hadn't. But now that I have, I feel I need to call up Ricki Lake and share my story for "Even More Business of Being Born" or something. Oh, the joke was totally on me.

  • Where in Oregon are you?  I'm asking because my former midwife just opened her own clinic in WallaWalla, WA and is a CNM who is doing homebirths... If you happen to be in eastern Oregon, could be worth a shot...

  • I just don't get this.  Why would an insurance agency cover a freakishly expensive hospital birth, but not an affordable home birth?  That's the part that never made sense to me.  I'm sure there's some Big Business reasoning behind it, but it still makes no sense money wise.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

  • Im a nurse in the state of MA. I am also a Doula and I cannot "legally" attend homebirths as a doula because I possess a nursing license. Im shocked nurses are allowed to attend homebirth at all in your state! That ROCKS. I hate the bias our society has on birth and the place in which we give birth. I have had 2 hospital births now because of money issues (and long labors) but mostly financial issues. I just feel so guilty that Im paying OOP for a birth experience. It makes me feel bad for my husband and my family so I end up having the hospital birth. Sighhhhhh
