Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Normal?

My son will be 1 years old on the 28th. And I still cant feed him meats, he chokes. He doesnt like babyfood because it doesnt taste like anything im guessing.. Im worried he isnt getting enough nutriotion.. All he pretty much eats is breastmilk still.. Is that bad?

Re: Normal?

  • Only 25% of his calories (that's the max- many babies are about 10%) should come from food at a year.  Just keep offering foods and he will get the hang of it. Do you mind nursing after he turns a year? I gave my son BM in a sippy until he was 18 months old (I EPed) and plan on nursing my daughter until at least 18 months as well. I feel like that is the age they really "get" eating.

  • It's not necessarily bad.. just not the timeline that is "normal" I guess.

I've been posting lately about my son's swallowing problems. He can only eat things that are completely pureed, otherwise he gags and vomits.

How does he not like babyfood? Is he able to eat it without choking, but turns his head away? Or is all babyfood difficult physically for him to eat?

What triggered us to talk to the doctor was that daycare sent DS home for puking, even though it wasn't because he had the flu, but because of his texture intolerance. I can't be losing hours at work each time he pukes, it happens a lot.

The good news is for us, he hadn't had weight issues (at 40th percentile), and there's nothing abnormal with his esophogus or stomach. Now the process of therapy can begin for us.

It's worth a trip to the dr to make sure your LO is growing ok, and if any intervention is necessary in your case.

  • My girls are going to be a year this month and still are only eating formula, puffs and purees.  They see a speech therapist though for tongue thrusting issues and based on her advice she didn't want them starting solids yet.  I plan to keep my girls on formula past the year mark for atleast an extra month or 2 or they get solids in their diet consistently. Maybe talk to you pediatrician about getting your LO evaluated by a S.T. It may help you guys get on track.

  • With DD#1 she didn't eat meat until almost her second birthday. She took herself off purees around 9 months old and with only 2 teeth until she was about 18 months only ate yogurt, eggs, rice and puffs... She is perfectly healthy at 2 1/2 and loves everything now. The timelines are just guidelines, do what is best for your baby regardless of what others tell you. They are each individual. I get that now more so since I have dd#2 now, I wish I hadnt been so concerened and tried to push DD#1 with her eating habits.

  • I've talked to my ped and read a lot of articles that their main food source until they are a year old is supposed to be milk (formula/breast milk) and regular foods like solids/finger foods are basically practice. I think that people try to pressure their kids into the next stage too fast sometimes. Not every baby does things the way the "guidelines" say. I would just keep trying to feed him finger foods/meats and he'll come around eventually. I wouldn't get stressed about it. I was not too long ago but I figured he's growing fine and healthy so he's fine. Good luck :)

FWIW, this is not what our pediatrician told me at DS' 9 month check-up.  He said that by the time they are 1 year old, they should be eating like the rest of us, so breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks in between.  He recommended a sippy of milk at all 3 meals and a sippy of water for him to have as much as he wants throughout the day.  He said we could also do a sippy of milk right before bed.  I've never heard of the "25% of calories from food" thing.

I'm thinking that we will cut out all formula at 1 year except for a nighttime bottle for at least a few months.  But otherwise, the calories that he intakes during the day will be from breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and whole milk.

OP- BM is the perfect food for your LO, even after a year. Just keep introducing foods and he will get it. How many college kids have to nurse between classes? ;)
