I had saved all of DD's clothes from the last five years just in case we had another girl. We've decided now that we're done having kids, so I've slowly been getting rid of all the clothes we saved, but was unsure what to do with the preemie stuff--especially the micropreemie stuff was too small for secondhand stores to want.
Finally I called children's hospital and they said they'd be glad to take it for their NICU. DD and DS went with me to drop it off. It felt good to give a little back to the NICU that saved DD's live, but it also felt like the end of a chapter in my life.
She'll always be a preemie, but giving those clothes away somehow felt like I was finally starting to separate myself from it all. It only took 5 years.
Consider this also a PSA: if you have old preemie clothes you're ready to get rid of, your hospital's NICU would probably take them.
Re: Got rid of my preemie clothes yesterday
I'm so glad you had that closure!
We gave all of DS's stuff to the NICU. I hope to have another baby but I'm hoping they won't be a preemie

We did keep two outfits though. The first outfit we put him in and a oneside that said "team dad" that I put over DS on father's day ... he started to wear clothes a few days later so he couldn't wear it. It meant a lot to DH so we couldn't let go of it. I plan on putting the one outfit on a toy he has and getting a picture of him with it on his first birthday!
That's awesome! I kept a round hat box full of Adalyn's time in the NICU, which included 4 of her onesies (her first ones), her first outfit, her first PJ, and her bp cuff, bili lights "sunglasses", hospital bracelets, etc. There aren't that many outfits, since we just had her in NB size (that she swam in) once we got her home, but if I had more I would've donated them.
I understand people wanting to get rid of that stuff and letting go, and it is great to donate them to the NICU and pay it forward, especially since so many babies have parents who can't afford to buy them preemie clothes. For me, I like to remember how tiny she really was and that she really did fit in that. I can't wait to share with her the story of her time in the NICU.
