House Temp Question

DH and I were discussing this last night. What is the best house temp for LO? I am particularly hot natured and have a hard time sleeping when I am hot. Our house is well insulated, so we usually set the house thermostat to 60 in the winter (it rarely dips that low..the thermostat is downstairs and 60 down there = 64-65 upstairs where all the bedrooms are) and the heat almost never runs at night. During the summer, we keep the house at 73-75 and I have a ceiling fan and a stand fan running on me all night. Does anybody know what the ideal temp for the house should be once LO arrives? I know the general rule is if you're hot, baby's hot..if you're cold, baby's cold but since my internal thermometer is off, I want to make sure LO is comfortable.

Re: House Temp Question

  • We've been struggling with this too since we like the house cooler at night (we have the programmable type thermostat, so it allows it to cool down in the evening/overnight).  I read somewhere though that the ideal temperature is 68-72 for newborns.  I would be okay that warm, but SO would be miserable (he's like you).  I think that we're going to try a little extra weight on LO (like a sleeper and a sleep sack) and supplement the heat in her room if necessary.

  • Before DS, we never let the heat get over 65 b/c we were too hot. But our pedi told us to keep the house at about 70 - at night he was in a cotton or fleece sleeper and a swaddle. We're following the same guide line now for DD and she seems to be pretty comfy. You'll know what's going to work if you feel that LO is sweaty or has cool cheeks, you'll be able to adjust accordingly :)

  • I think it depends on how your rooms are vented. Our house has an open living room (2 story, if that makes sense), so all the heat rises up to the bedrooms. Even so, LO's room only has one vent, so her room can still get chilly. DH and I's room has 2 vents, and it makes us really hot.

We currently close off our 2 vents (b/c we like it to be cold) and keep the girls' vents all open. We set the house on 72, which seems to keep their rooms a nice temperature.

Again, I don't think it's so much about the number, but how well your house is circulated.

I also agree with PP who said around 70 is a good temp (as long as they are in a swaddle or microfleece jams). The risk of SIDS goes up if it's too hot or too cold.

  • Wow... Apparently personal opion on what is hot vs cold varies greatly!  I would not put a baby in fleece if the house was 70%... But I run warm and DS was always warm, too...  We plan on keeping the house at 68-70 during the day and 65-68 at night.  Baby will likely sleep in a sleeper plus a light swaddle blanket.  Those fleece sleepers really hold in the heat.  We had to stop putting them on my 2 year old because he wasn't sleeping well/was getting too hot (even with the house at 65 degrees and only one blanket).

i agree, it does vary a ton! DS was born 12/10, so it was cold here in Jersey. Then we got 2+ feet if snow the day after Christmas and his room is the coolest in the house. Once he was 4 months old (April) we stopped swaddling. Now that he's 2, he def can't wear feet pjs anymore b/c his feet sweat so bad! DD seems to be a bit cooler than DS was, so I'll have to take extra care to make sure I figure out her comfort zone...
