anyone use vicks for congestion?

I think I'm going out to get it at lunchtime. DD is really suffering. The pedi said he isn't overimpressed by it but it's ok to give it a try. I had a number of moms (including my SIL) tell me they used to put vicks on their kids feet and have them sleep with socks on. Works like a charm. Anyone try vicks either the old fashioned way or the feet/socks thing?

Re: anyone use vicks for congestion?

  • I've heard that as well.  We have a Vick's vaporizer and use that with the Vick's strips you can putin it when he's not feeling well.

  • Ive used the baby rub on DS and the johnsons menthol bath. I think it may open them up a little but I think it helps me think Im doing something to help more than anything. I do a half dose of tylenol or pediacare when really necessary. Vicks is worth a try though. Maybe its different for every child. Ive never put it on his feet but Ive heard of it. I always put in on his chest
  • I used the vapor in the humidifier for DD, until I read that under 2 is too young to use Vicks. I researched why, and I read that Vicks doesn't actually open you up, it tricks your brain into thinking that you can breathe, but you actually aren't breathing any better than you were before using Vicks.
  • We use baby vicks and put it on her feet and chest.  Not sure if it works but it seems too.
  • We use the baby Vicks and I put it on my son's upper back and chest.  Hope your daughter feels better, soon.

  • I use baby vicks and love it!!! I put it on his feet with socks on and I put a little on his chest when he's stuffy. I love it and continue to use it.
Also use a humidifier. Those help so much.

  • They actually just came out with a study that said Vicks actually increases mucous production. It does cause temporary relief but overall is more harmful then good. I would just use a humidifier and wait it out. It certainly is hard when they are sick.

  • We used the vicks vaporub (on chest and feet) and the vicks plug-in unit w/ DD's last cold.  She slept well at night despite being congested during the day time.  Also, she didn't cough at night.  I cannot prove that the vicks actually helped at all - but the results were good enough that I will repeat the process if she gets sick again.
  • I use Target brand baby rub. I also got a PediaCare (or PediaSure, can't remember) Little Vapors plug in thing. It comes with strips to put in it. I also use a humidifier and give a bath a night every night. I have the vapor bath stuff too, but never used it - always forgot.

  • We've been rubbing him up with it the last few nights and it seems to have helped, but you can never be sure.  We put it on his feet, chest, and a tad under his nose.  He likes it.
  • saline drops in their nose works wonders and my pedi told me it helps flush things out to help prevent ear infections too.

I have used vicks on her feet and put it on a washcloth in her room to keep it in the air.

  • I use the Vicks Vapo Pads in the humidifier and they work great.

  • Scientific studies say it doesn't work.  However, we use it and it seems to help.  I also LOVE the smell of vicks.  Probably because my mom used it on me as a kid.  It is super comforting to me.  So, I like it when I am sick now for that reason.  I like to think he does too :)

  • We do vicks on the feet and I think it helps. We also put it on the chest and back. I still use the baby vicks on DS2 though.

We do the Vicks Vaporizer, the Vicks Plug In and the Vicks rub on his chest.  It helps a lot.  But wow, typing that out it looks like a lot of Vicks.... :)

  • We use it on the chest and feet. Who knows if it does anything but it makes me feel better knowing I tried.
  • We do.  I don't think it is a miracle worker, but it does help.  We put it on her back.
