DS therapist also asked if DS had a developmental peditrician yet. What is the difference between developmental ped and a regular ped? Sorry if this is silly question. This stuff is just all new to me. Thanks.
There are posts about developmental pedis a few posts down on this page and there should be a few more if you look on the next few pages of this forum.
Think of a dev pedi as a specialst for kids who have developmental delays or other disabilities. They provide assesments, treatment options etc.
A regular pedi is a great general practioner for kids - well visits, colds, ear infections etc. They can identify kids who may be developmentally behind but that is about all.
DS's regular pedi's still sees him for everything she did before. Annual exams, sick visits, sprains etc.
DS's Dev Pedi would like to see him annually or if he has in changes in areas related to ASD. She's the go to person for the big picture on all things ASD.
My son's Dev Ped is at Childrens Hospital in Denver, and we live 5 hours from there. So, for sick visits and the like he sees his regular Ped here in town. This guy fully supported us taking him to Childrens and is happy to defer to what the Dev Ped wants.
Also, I have a hard time truly trusting that our small town Dr's can give ds the best level of care. We actually had a 6 month old pass away 4 1/2 yrs ago and I there are parts to his story that should have been treated differently. I know that if we were in a big town with a better hospital he would still be with us today. But, that is a whole diffterent story!
As to the need for a Dev Ped I just love having ds2 under her care, we call her the Queen Dr She has multiple patients with my son's syndrome, whereas he is the only kiddo here in town with it. She is there whenever I need her - like right now ds is having some odd eye movements that might be seizures, and I am in daily contact with her about it. She has scheduled an EEG and neuro appt for next week and looked at the video's we've sent of the activity. I feel like his reg Ped can do follow up care if he is diagnosed with seizures but just feel more comfortable having the diagnosing done at a Chlidrens hospital.

So then would my DS keep his Ped he has had his whole life. Then in addition see the developmental Ped. Or would he lose his old Ped altogether?
