I was just on my facebook page and I came across a picture of me while I was in labor. My sister had posted it a few months back. It never had hit me so hard of how medicated I was and uncomfortable lying on my back with monitors hooked up to me and IV's pumping fluids. All because I decided to go with an epidural. I was at 8cm when they gave me this epidural and I have felt guilt over it now... Anyways, All I can do is move forward and make different choices with the LO.
My options are....
Birthing Center... brings fears of the "what ifs"..
Hospital Birth with a midwife in hope to go all natural
(Im hoping that the fact that the birthing center is a quarter of the price is not having to much of an affect on my decision)
For anyone that is using a Birthing Center, please give me your reasons on doing so...any comments to help ease my mind will be great. I have done alot of research myself, but person experiences would be great to hear.
Thanks everyone.
Re: Possible Birthing Center
If you're considering using a birthing center, see if you can take a tour of the facility and have some of your "what ifs" answered. When do they deem a transfer necessary? What happens in the event of an emergency? Etc. Also, seeing as you're already 31 weeks along, you need to see if they still have room for you or not not (many BC are smaller and can only take so many clients at a time).
Reasons we decided to go the BC route:
* No IV/heplock unless it's obvious I'm dehydrated and can't drink enough fluids to keep up
* Am able to eat whatever and whenever
* Only 1 RN and 1 MW present for the birth, not a room full of people (unless we want a ton of friends and family there)
* We feel more confident that if the time comes for an intervention, it is truly being done in mine and the baby's best interest, not just to rush things along.
* Automatic skin-to-skin, encouragement to breastfeed, delayed cord clamping
* Every room has a tub & shower, and getting up to move around is encouraged
* Basically most things you'd have to "fight for" or put on your birth plan and worry about getting ignored is already done at our BC. It's so nice to not have those things in the back of my mind -- "are they going to let me do it or not?"
* No dinging bells, loud noises, or hustle bustle to bother you when trying to sleep
* MW is there from start to finish -- no "don't push yet, we have to wait for the dr to get here" (yeah, screw that)
Honestly, I could go on and on. Most people really focus on the negative "what ifs" of a BC, and tend to forget about the other side.
What if you have a beautiful and peaceful natural birth on your own terms?
What if you are able to relax and enjoy your birth that much more due to less worries and fears about the staff following your birth plan or unnecessary interventions?
Think about those what ifs as well.
There are definitely many hospitals out there where you can get this kind of experience as well. However, I will say after going through my birth class with 2 other couples (both delivering with MW at a hospital), when we were going over interventions and writing a birth plan, it was very apparent that there were still big differences between the two (with what you were allowed to do, with what you had to specifically ask for, and what you couldn't do). You just have to remember if you go the hospital route, that you are still at a hospital and subject to their policies and protocols.
