Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Geez....why do parents think

they can say anthing they want to you?

We live in FL and its great almost all year long. We do get the "colder" days. and the rainy days that feel very winter like.

Well yesterday we had to drive into a big city for a doc apt for my dd. Its 70 miles away from our home. We left 2 hours and 5 min before we were supposed to check in. Well due to the rain we got a lot of traffic.

I was all worried about making it, I even called the doc office who told me their policy that if we are late then they will TRY to work us in but I may have to reschedule. I made this apt over 3 months ago.

My mother called to see where we were and if we made it. I told her what happened and her response was " well you didn't leave enough time to get there apparently" REALLY?!?!? Its not like I am stressed enough.

Then we went to the mall after (because its on the way home and well I needed to do some shopping). When we got home my mother called again and said, if that was me, and with the weather and everything. I would have taken those children home right after the doc apt...

Really?? Again?? I was like it was right there and I didn't want to waste gas going there another day...we were INDOORS. We even found a #1 spot near the door to the store......

GRRRRRR..............

  • Sounds like my mother.  She tries to make everything negative or to put guilt on me.  I just ignore her phone calls most of the time and keep details to a minimum.  Then, I hate to admit it, but if it's been especially rough, I have a glass of wine that night.  You are a great mom and don't worry about what she says!

  • Maybe she was just nervous for you because she's uncomfortable driving in the rain, if it's that infrequent.  We live in New England, so I'm pretty comfortable driving in a blizzard or whatever, but my mom (despite growing up in New England herself) is still terrified to be out driving if it's snowing at all.  Because of that she always wants me to be home safe if it's snowing out, and gets panicky if I'm out with DD driving around in the snow.

But I'm justifying.  It's still terribly annoying to have judgments imposed on you for whatever reason, especially for something so silly as stopping at the mall.

  • My mom is like that too. She makes comments all the time about DH being a SAHD and she also acts like she doesnt know his name..."Well whats his name needs to get a job and be a man"...Also DD is built just like me...Were Hispanic so its that hour glass type figure....anyway she is always saying shes gonna be fat if we dont watch what she eats and calls her Chubby...Yes DH despises her.

  • Annoying for sure.

Sometimes though as much as we hate to admit it, our mom's still worry about us and it just comes out all wrong. My mom is great for the most part, but she's said some dumb things to me too in a state of worry.

Somet of it is also generational. We're a very mobile, take your kids anywhere now sort of society. When our generation was growing up and esp. when our parents were growing up, it wasn't like this at all. Kids rarely went out muchless anywhere under "questionable" circumstances. KWIM?

Let it go. You're doing your best and by by no means nothing out of the ordinary or remotely wrong.

Seriously?  If this was my mom I wouldn't be speaking to her, oh wait, my mom is the same way, and I'm not on speaking terms with her.  It's so annoying that because they were a parent before you that they know what is better. *Sigh*
