My son is in 1st grade. He's in a regular ed class, but gets OT, speech, and psych to help with social/pragmatic issues. I just got a general e-mail about a weekly chorus opportunity from january to april. My son loves music, but does not sing well. Due to auditory processing issues and his speech he is either ahead or behind the other singers. He also sings in monotone ( speaking and singing voice hovers around the same tone). I think this would be great for him to sing cooperatively in a group. I just don't know if he would need too much support/would follow what the group is doing. I want to be considerate, but also want him to have this opportunity. What are your thoughts?
Re: torn about son's participation in school music activity....
The chorus is a school activity. I like that it's short team and not too big of a commitment at this point. The team is monitoring for ADD and/or autism. They don't feel it's quite time for a diagnosis yet. The school is supporting him the same with or without at this point. OT is for the cadence of his writing(it's currently slow and labored), grip strength, core strength, and some sensory. ( I think he has sensory issues, but we've managed) He has good affect, and his voice inflection does not remain flat. A lot of times he talks too loud (he had tubes for awhile). His speaking voice does hover around the same note. He also has a funny cadence to his voice (kind of like a robot) He has a history of seizures and the medication he's on can slow general processing down as it works to slow the brain to prevent a seizure from starting. I'm hoping to try to wean him in the spring if the neuro thinks it would be ok as he'll be 2 years seizure free at that point.
I think music would be great for him, I just want him to continue to enjoy it and not be frustrated. It's funny your boy didn't like music class. My guy struggles with his impulsivity in high gear in that class. I think it's all the noise and distractions. I do know he has a hard time isolating and hearing words if everyone is singing. He's a complicated fellow!
