High-Risk Pregnancy

Newbie joining the group

Hello Ladies!

Currently 18 weeks pregnant with my first baby. This pregnancy took me by suprise because my plan was to work on my weight and I have a hx of hbp. Well things happend differently but I watch my weight, eating more healthy and so far my weight gain ~4lbs is good. My blood pressure is doing fine but we received news last week that my blood work came back as 1:85 chance for Down's and + that I am a sickle cell carrier. We had an u/s today and no soft markers for Down's present (club feet, femur, nuchal etc) was all fine but no guarantee with ultrasounds. Now tomorrow I meet with a genetic counselor to see my options of Harmony test vs Amniocentesis. My brain is wrecked and I find myself googling everyday about the Harmony test because I work in a lab that does genetic testing on amnios but terrified of the risk of going into premature labor or infection/bleeding. I wanted to see if any ladies on here had the Harmony test and how they felt about it.

Thank you and wish you all a health pregnancy!

  • It sounds like to me you need to do some more research and talk with your healthcare provider before proceeding with anymore tests. Honestly i would struggle with what to do as well like you are. Saying a prayer for you and your LO.

  • Do the Harmony test! It's just as accurate as amnio but without the risk!

With my first pregnancy, I came back as a 1:88 risk of Down syndrome. The Harmony test wasn't available yet, and I refused amnio... I didn't want to take even the tiniest extra risk of causing pre-term labor or miscarriage. (Baby did not have Down syndrome, btw.) This pregnancy, I took the Harmony test and was glad to have results back quickly without the risk of amnio. There's no reason not to do Harmony unless for some reason insurance doesn't cover it or something. Best wishes to you and your baby!

  • I did have my blood drawn today for the Harmony test and I feel pretty confident after meeting with the genetic counselor. Even with the 1:85 odds, I still have 98-99% of having a baby without downs and the u'/s yesterday in the ob office showed no soft markers. The counselor did say u/s can only detect 50% of down but still a good chance of no problems with u/s and 1:85 chance. The turn around time for the Harmony is 2 weeks.

Thank you both!Big Smile Congrats on both your babies being healthy!
