Babies: 6 - 9 Months

9 mo early intervention for speech?

Hi everyone,
Just had my 6 mo apt for my lo and mentioned my concerns about how quiet she is. She is advanced in her motor skills and her hearing is fine, but she is just v quiet. They mentioned that if she is still this quiet at 9 mo they will send out early intervention to test her and see if she needs anything.

Anyone have early intervention at 9 mo? I am just thinking ahead and can't imagine what they would do for a 9mo old for speech therapy! Anyone BTDT?

  • DS was exactly the same way.  He was super quiet and only made 2 sounds at 6 months, but super ahead in motor skills.  They checked his hearing & that came out fine.  He is still fairly quiet in relative terms to a lot of other kids (except when tired, then the rambles non stop...loudly).  We had his 9 month apt. last week, and the Dr. said he's now in the normal range.   He didn't become "more verbal" until just around 8 months, and still doesn't make tons of different sounds, but the typical bababa (started last week), dadadada, ahhh, eee.

  • DS1 did EI for expressive communication. The red flags for it came up at his 9 month appointment (he had never made a consonant sound, etc) and we had him tested at 11 months. The reasons he qualified for EI at 11 months were that he was not clapping/waving/pointing, would not follow a point, would not consistently respond to "no" or his name, would not correctly look when you asked something like "where's daddy?", etc., and made no consonant sounds. He barely qualified - he had a 25% delay (they actually have changed the parameters in my state and you need at least a 30% delay to qualify now)

Anyway, EI was great. Our therapist came once a week and basically taught me ways to play with him that would encourage development of the skills he needed. He "graduated" in 6 months. His first word was at 15 months old (and he didn't say mama or dada until well after that). He is 100% fine - a chatterbox with an excellent vocabulary (if i do say so myself!). There was nothing "wrong" with him, he just developed those skills later than average. He walked and crawled very early, though :)

  • 9 months seems a little early, depending on the situation. Late babbling is not abnormal but it can signal other problems if your LO is not showing any intent to communicate. Basically what DevonPow said - if your baby is not making consonant sounds but has a variety of other sounds, like laughing, cooing, etc. to show different emotions, if they are imitating or attempting to imitate gestures then they are probably fine, just late developing. However, if they're not making any effort to engage in communication that would be a red flag. Regardless, early intervention certainly wouldn't hurt anything - better to have it looked at now than a year or two down the road! Most likely, he's just late and will catch up soon. It's not necessarily, on its own, an indicator that anything is wrong.
