hematoma on the placenta

After several miscarriages earlier in the year, my cousin and his wife have finally made it to the 2nd trimester of a pregnancy. Unfortunately, they found a hematoma on her placenta a few weeks ago. The mama to be tells me that its much more common to develop a hematoma in the 1st tri rather than the second. Her OB seems to be taking it seriously, and she's been on bed rest for almost 2 weeks. They were hoping for the hematoma to heal while she's been resting. She had an ultrasound this morning and will go to the doc tomorrow morning for the results. If it doesn't heal, she'll have to remain on bedrest and she's only 21 weeks pg.

I was just wondering if any of you had experience with this or a similar issue of if anyone knows anything about it.

Re: hematoma on the placenta

  • Nothing beyond the things you already know...way more common in 1st Tri and they put you on bedrest until it is resolved. My friend had one and was on rest for six weeks until she was cleared at 27 weeks. She went full term and delivered a healthy little boy. So it is possible to recover and all. I hope that will be the case for your cousin too. Poor girl!

  • I hope so too. I spent 10 weeks on bed rest and it was hell. I can't even imagine 19 or 20 weeks!
