Preemies

My water broke @ 22 weeks

I'm here to introduce myself and hopefully get some words of encouragement.  I am 22 weeks and 4 days.  I found out yesterday that I have P Prom, my water has broken.  I was sent home and am on bedrest.  The perinatalogist hopes I will make it to 24 weeks at which point I will be admitted to the hospital.

Looking for advice and others who have gone to similar situations.  We've been down the NICU road with our twins who were born at 31 weeks.  Am hoping and praying we can make it at least that far again.

Re: My water broke @ 22 weeks

  • Welcome. Let me first say I'm sorry you have to go through this.

My DD was born due to spontaneous preterm labor at 23w6d--I had about 8 hours notice. The best advice I can offer is to take everything one day at a time. Having two preemies already you're probably aware of the ups and downs, but micropreemies can be scary.

Don't research all the "could happens." There's a lot that can happen at this age but it doesn't mean it will and thinking and worrying about it will increase your stress level tenfold.

At first the doctors and nurses may not be willing to give you a prognosis. There will be a lot of "I don't know what will happen" in your future. It's normal but very frustrating.

When people ask how they can help, for me, the two things that were the most helpful were meals and visits. I spent a lot of time by DD's side and it got pretty lonely. That many weeks in a NICU can be very isolating; don't be afraid to ask for visits. Many people won't think to come unless invited.

Good luck and I'll be praying you make it as far as possible.

So very sorry that you will be taking a ride on the NICU rollercoaster. But take the time right now to do as much research you can on the NICU and get info on how to deal emotionally and what is normal for you to feel. I think one of the hardest parts for me was not knowing we would be in the NICU so we werent prepared for anything. Take the time and it could be just a tad but easier.

    I'm sorry.nbsp; You are not at home.nbsp; You can't be.nbsp; If you pPROMed, you need to be admitted to the hospital and given antibiotics, being home is way too dangerous for you and baby.I pPROMed at 28 weeks and delivered at 31.nbsp; Don't lose hope, but please call your doctor and demand to know why you are not in the hospital.nbsp; I'm too upset by this to write any more.nbsp;

Agreed!!!! I had an abruption at 22 weeks and they wanted to send me home because baby would've been too little. I sought a second opinion from another OB who agreed it was too risky for me to be home. Water broke in hospital at 33 weeks, and long story short if it had happened at home I would have died.

    Please seek a second opinion.
  • When I was on bed rest in the hospital my roommates water broke and she lasted six weeks in the hospital. She could have gone longer but the hospital ended up inducing her when she was far enough along.

  • Am trying to stay positive and have faith. Both my OB and perinatalogists agree that I should be at home for now. I'm doing outpatient appointments to check for infections and to monitor baby. I guess I have to trust what they are telling me for now. The perinatalogist group I'm seeing is supposed to be the best in state. I'm closing monitoring everything and speaking to my dr office daily. I'm bit sure what else there is to do. Thanks to the boards I'm hearing some very positive stories/outcomes.

Thanks for the kind words. It's nice to have others who know what I'm going though. Thank you again! Take care will keep you posted.

  • Id suggest getting a second opinion.  I think the best place for you and your baby would be on hospital bedrest with antibiotics and fluids.  Infection can come on quickly and can be dangerous to you and your baby... Im sure you know this.  I was admitted to the hospital at 21w 6 d because of an extremely short cervix.  Initially I was admitted because I was possibly going to get a cerclage.  When the cerclage was not possible they considered sending me home but we decided  that it was best to stay in the hospital because it was nearly impossible to recreate the "captivity" at home.

I ultimately delivered at 25 weeks but had scares at 23 and 3 and 24 and 2 that would have very likely had very different outcomes if I didnt have immediate access to fluids, antibiotics, and magnesium.

Thinking about you and your precious baby.  take things one day at a time... every day matters in this next month and it is very possible to stay pregnant for quite some time.

  • So sorry that this is happening to you!  My water broke at 24 weeks.  I went directly to the hospital and was not allowed to leave until I delivered.  I'm a little surprised that they let you go home as well.  I know its very scary now, and I'm sure it will be until you see your baby.  I was terrified every day but I didnt actually go into labor until 33 weeks and had a very healthy baby.  Only 2 1/2 weeks in the NICU, just long enough to learn to eat on her own.  I know its a scary time and it is important to get as much information as you can about any possible outcome, but don't give up hope that everything will work out great!

  • I agree with the PPs who said the only place you should be right now is in the hospital. It's the safest place for you and your baby.  I would definitely get a second opinion on that.

I pPROMed at 29w2d and lasted 4 weeks on hospital bed rest.  I delivered my twins at 33w4d.

Good luck! I hope you can keep that baby in.

  • Thank you again for all the kind words.  I found a p prom support group and the ladies on that board agreed, like you said CurlingRocks, that this was the normal course of treatment.  I know it sounds almost bizarre, and I too questioned the doctors so many times and even called back this morning after reading all of your comments.  They again assured me that I am fine at home.  They are monitoring me via outpatient treatment.  I go in again on Friday for another exam & bloodwork to check for an infection.  I'm hoping to be one of those amazing success stories and make it a few more weeks.  Thank you again.

  • This happened to my sister at 17 weeks, her DD was born at 25weeks. She is almost two now, and is doing great, no health or development problems! I'm praying your LO stays in there for many many many more weeks!
  • No advice here since I PPROMed at close to term so they just delivered but I wanted to send my thoughts and prayers for you and your LO. I hope everything stays stable and you stay pregnant for many more weeks. Best of luck.
