Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DD will be eating purees till she's two

I'm so frustrated and not sure what is right and wrong with what to do about it. My DD absolutely refuses to eat anything besides carb (pasta), dairy (yogurt & cheese) and she seriously wont eat ANYTHING else. I for the longest time was just giving her purees cuz I knew she would eat them and I felt good knowing she wasn't hungry and was getting good nutrition. I've been fed up with purees for two months now but wasn't sure how to transition away just b/c they have felt so easy especially b/c she doesn't like to eat anything else.

She hates texture. She loves apples but just chews it till its mush and spits it out. Same with pears, oranges, you name it. She never ones has liked banana or eggs or avocado or beans or chicken or or or or. LOL but I continue to offer these things thinking one day she'll change her mind

Just this week I have been giving her what I want her to eat, excluding purees cuz i'm DONE :o) and I swear she hasn't even eaten this week, Other than her oatmeal and fruit in the A.M.

I keep offering her what I would consider yummy, healthy foods and she wants nothing to do with it. This afternoon it was broccoli, peas, pasta and chicken for lunch and she just would put it in her mouth and spit it all out violently like it's poison.

Is it awful of me to continue to offer her this same meal today until she eats it? I don't want her thinking she can just throw it around and get what she wants after complaining about it to me. She'd be stoked on yogurt and pureed fruit any day. She's hungry I know it and wont eat what I give her unless it's a cracker or something but I don't want her to snack her life away, right?

Any advice would be much appreciated! I'm feeling so awful of a mom.

And a side note is that I still nurse her. Once in the AM then nap and bed. So she will just claw at me to nurse cuz she's hungry. uhg. IDK what to do

  • Food aversions are rough. My sister is a speech therapist and actually does therapy for kids that have sensory issues with food textures, flavors, etc.  if you feel her problem is really severe you could ask your pedi for a referral to have her evaluated.

Otherwise, I think you're doing a great job of working with her.  My son has had his issues with changes in his diet too (bottles, cups, milk, etc) and my way of dealing with it was to just make him confront the issue until he got over it.  He didn't want to use a sippy, so I just offered nothing but the sippy for a few days until he decided he was thirsty enough and drank from it.

Granted, my kid has always been big for his age, so I wasn't too concerned if he didn't eat very much for a few days.  If you're more concerned, I would do battle over breakfast and dinner, but keep lunch easy so I know she's getting one decent meal a day.

  • You're not alone! My 16 month old gets the majority of his nutrition from chunky pur?es still. I stressed majorly over this from 12-15 months and have actually stopped worrying over it do much recently ( partially because I'm due with #2 in 4 weeks and I can only worry about so much at a time!)

DS is perfectly capable of eating finger foods and table foods because he has done it, so we've ruled out a sensory issue there. He ate an entire sample slice of roast beef while in the shopping cart at Whole Foods recently, yet I tried to give him that same roast beef the next 3 days in a row at home and he refused to even try it. He sometimes will eat pasta or cheese and goes through phases of refusing them. He will sometimes eat chunks of some fruits like bananas or peaches, but sometimes refuses them. He will always eat dessert type breads like banana nut or pumpkin but he hates sliced breads like white or wheat. At this point I've compromised and I give him a homemade chunky pur?e mixed with milk and baby oatmeal at meals. I give him a finger food to try on his tray while eating the pur?e. Sometimes he eats it, often he doesn't. He'll eat the whole bowl of banana and steamed squash mushed up together though. He eats normal toddler snacks at snack time with no issue...crackers, rice cakes with peanut butter, etc and will always drink milk. It's just meal time that he doesn't want to make the transition on, and after trying the withholding other food thing and it failing, I'm content to give him his pur?es at meal time for now and maybe I'll try being a harda*s about it again in a couple months. I was only willing to let him go without dinner for so many nights before I felt like that method just wasn't working for us.

Sorry I don't have any real advice to offer, but you're not alone. And our little ones will eventually stop eating like babies sometime before college, right?!

  • I am glad I am not alone!  The doctor didn't seem too concerned last time I went in, but now it has been going on for 5 or more months.  I am torn about stopping the purees too because at least he is eating something??  It is frustrating to keep offering the food and wasting it plus wasting my time and effort all the time.  I try not to make it a big deal in front of him and lately I have been stressing over it less and just make sure he eats one decent thing each day.  From 8-11 months he did great eating what we ate and then stopped for some reason.  I keep telling myself that I won't have a 10 year old eating purees, so at some point it will stop LOL.  Good luck!

  • My LO used to eat finger foods fairly well until just after Thanksgiving.  At that point he started refusing everything unless it was a puree from a pouch or spoon fed.  His 1yo check up was that same week and th eDr mentioned his throat looked a little red, so maybe it hurt to swallow and thats what started the aversion.

Well, another week went by and he STILL wouldnt eat...turns out he had thrush in his mouth.  Well, we are now 3 weeks in and he will now only eat purees from a pouch, goldfish crackers, and chunks of banana.  He refuses to eat at daycare.

I have decided I will be buying purees until he is 5...

  • I'm little to no help here, but DD is also very picky.  She never like purees except for the fruit/veggie mixed pouches that we still carry around for snacks occasionally.  I was going to suggest soups or hummus.  DD loves this stuff and for your DD is resembles purees??
