Babies: 9 - 12 Months

teething - what do I need to know?

Hi all,

I posted this on the 0-6 month board too, but thought that you all might have more experience to share.

I was really hoping that we'd have a little more time before we had to worry about this, but the kiddo is teething. The poor dear went to her 4-month appointment this week and the doctor says that she has 4 teeth coming up already.

Anyone have any tips to share? She's pretty fussy and does a whining/crying thing - we picked up some of the teething numbing gel, and gave her a bit of tylenol earlier. She's not interested in the cold wet rag or the teething ring yet, though she's sucking on her hand and fingers a lot.

 Thanks!!

Re: teething - what do I need to know?

  • Switching off between motrin and tylenol is a good idea.  Also, our old pediatrician suggested massaging her gums and that works really well.  We do it at bedtime and she hates it while we're doing it, but usually settles down and falls asleep immediately afterwards.

  • DS actually likes his teeth brushed - he'll open up for it, let me brush, and then he grabs at the toothbrush and chomps down on it.

He's got 4 teeth coming in at the same time (teeth 3-6) and it looks like 2 more aren't far behind.  We give him Tylenol if it's really bothering him.

  • Don't use Motrin!  Motrin is for 6 months and older.

The Orajel stuff works for only about 15 minutes and then it wears off.  Somebody had really bad experience where their DC's throat got numbed and they had a hard time breathing and turned blue, they started breathing again, but SCARY!  So, my suggestion with Orajel is use a very small amount, don't do it before bed, and don't do it before nursing/feeding/giving a pacifier.

Hyland's teething tablets work awesome, but there is Belladonna in it, which is apparently some kind of poison, I don't know the specifics.  That's what we give DS, he hates medicine, but he loves these and they work really well for him.
