Pumping moms - PISA question

I have been back to work for 4 months now, pumping 3x's a day.  Lately my pump has started to sound like it's not getting as good of suction as it used to.  Also, I'm getting a lot of condensation built up in the tubes from milk spraying into them.  Is this a sign that it's time to replace the membranes and/or tubes?  Should I be doing something special to care for the tubes to make sure they're not building up with bacteria?

Re: Pumping moms - PISA question

  • replace the white flanges (you can find at BRU) and I bet that will help a great deal.  I would steam the tubes every week to keep them clean, you can boil them as well I think.  condensation is normal in the tubes, but there really shouldn't be milk getting in there ... do you how is that happening?

  • Thanks, I will definitely buy some replacement membranes.  I can see the milk spraying into the tubes when I pump.  It only happens if I'm really full.
  • Start with the membranes.

You should probably get new tubing too.  It's normal for there to be a little condensation and some resultant buildup, but there should be milk spraying into the tubes.

  • Whenever you finish pumping, you might want to run the pump for a few minutes with the tubes attached but no horns. That should clear out any condensation and/or milk.

  • I switched form a PISA to an Ameda Purely Yours because I got tired of my PISA losing suction and the condensation in the tubes. I've been very happy with my Ameda.
  • Ditto *flyer*... run your pump without it being hooked up to anything after you're done, for say 5 minutes or so. Dries up your tubing. Also, the microwave sterilizer bags from Medela work awesome for tubing. They're easy, reusable for 20 times, and affordable ($5-8). GL!
