Any horrible fingerprick stories?

We just came back from our daughter's one-year doctor's appointment, during which she got her fingerstick blood test for lead.  My nerves are still shaking!  It took 5 minutes of them pricking her thumb (no exaggeration), blood all over her clothes, her screaming from the pain.  They said the problem was that she wasn't bleeding fast enough.  I'm just wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience, or whether they messed up?  I thought it would be fairly quick like a vaccine.

  • My pedi does toe pricks - maybe you can request next time cos she barely cried the first time (wimpered next time). But the first time, she had to do the second foot cos her first foot didn't bleed enough, so that's probably common.

  • my pedi does toe pricks, but we had a similar experience at my los 12 months well. the nurse was new (which we didnt know until after) and pricked her toe THREE times. the whole collection took 15 minutes, and dd screamed and cried the whole time. i had to hold her down and it was AWFUL. normally, i love our pedis office, but after that i question which nurse will be in the room with us.
  • With our older one, they did a finger prick and he didn't even cry.  It just took a second.  However, the baby was in the hospital right after Thanksgiving and they came in two mornings in a row and did a foot prick...they had to prick her at least 3 time both days.  They said she was a slow bleeder....so I guess there is such a thing.

  • my daughters was horrible! they pricked her in the same finger twice and had to squeeze and squeeze to get enough blood she was screaming and she did get blood on her too  i felt so bad for her! and after it was all over and done with she threw a fit about the band-aid! I am going to request the toe like other have suggested next visit. i felt like the pain she went through was completely unnecessary.
  • We always request numbing cream to be applied at the beginning of our appointment for any shots or pricks, and then we use Buzzy (buzzy4shots.com)... I have a needle phobia, so I think it's best to take preventative steps to ensure DS doesn't "acquire" it so to speak

Prior to getting Buzzy, I remember him as a baby getting the bili test for the 5th time and both of us just crying and crying... I'm sure the nurse thought we were crazy, but it was horrible!

ETA: Also, my grandma who was an ER nurse said they should really do pinky pricks because the pinky always bleeds --- though I can't really say I've tried it out lol

  • The same thing happened to my LO as well, except for blood being everywhere. I held her as tight as I could and the nurse held her hand as tight as she could. She was trying to squeeze out the blood because it was coming so slow and it took at least five minutes. DD was hysterical, but I think it was mostly because we were confining her, although I'm sure the experience was uncomfortable as well. After it was done, she had four shots and I comforted her like normal and she was fine. But yes, the prick was NOT fun for her or for me. :-(
