Retrograde Ejaculation

Hi ladies,

I am recently married. I know at some point in the future my husband and I will want to have kids. He now has retrograde ejaculation from a procedure he had done last year. Do any of you have any experience with this or had success with an IUI or IVF? I would really love some input. Thanks!

  • To find success stories ask Pregnant after IF or Success after IF . As most of those who post here are still trying to conceive baby #1, and have not found success.

  • Thanks so much! I will check over on the other boards.
  • ***Ticker Warning***

My DH has retrograde ejaculation due to nerve damage from surgery.  We were able to retrieve sperm via a testicular biopsy the day of the egg retrieval, although our RE did suggest doing the biopsy sooner and freezing anything we found so that we'd know there would be something on ER day. We just didn't have the time or money for two procedures.

If your husband does not have an issue with sperm counts, then it is possible to have a post ejaculate urine sample spun to retrieve sperm and do an IUI.  But he'd have to have really good counts.  They literally found 3 sperm in one sample, and DH's pH levels were always off, so IVF was always the only option for us.

There is at least one other girl on the PAIF board whose DH has retrograde ejaculation, so you may want to post this there as well.

  • I didn't see a post by you in PAIF so I thought I'd answer here. Hope that's okay.

We didn't have retrograde ejac. We had anejac due to nerve damage from DH's cancer surgery in 09 (he had colon cancer, stage 3b). So getting anything out of the urine would've been a dream for us. They thought at one point that it was retro, but only 1 sperm was found and it was dead. So they diagnosed him with anejac instead and IVF was our only option.

We had a MESA done, and froze 5 vials (originally 6 but they did a test thaw on one). We did our IVF in Oct/Nov. Only one vial needed to be thawed, and half of our mature eggs fertilized normally. We ended up transferring two and freezing three. So we ended up with about a quarter of the mature eggs making it all the way to blast.

    We did have success.

    Good luck to you!!

  • My DH is also nerve damage from surgery. I wont get into details but it would have been really helpful if we would have known it was a possibility. Partly our fault for not looking into the surgery more but I didn't even know what was possible. Thanks to both of you ladies for responding. To see that both of you have had success make me a. so happy for you and b. gives me hope.
  • We weren't aware that this sort of thing could happen from surgery either... Although initially DH was supposed to have laproscopic surgery for his tumor. They went in and his tumor was sticking to his bladder so they asked me if they could open him all the way up to ensure they got it all. I of course agreed, didn't think to ask if there were any "new" possible complications from the change in surgery (although it wouldn't have mattered anyway, his life is the most important thing). Then later had to shell out the money for the MESA before chemo/rad could start....

  • DH had urethral stricture surgery. I guess I am going into detail now. Most 30 year olds dont have the problem of going to the bathroom 5 times a night but he did. It wasn't hurting anything just more annoying to him. I really appreciate you talking to me about this. I have googled and never really found the answers I was looking for.
  • Oh that's awful :( I can't imagine. I'm glad he got it taken care of, although it's seriously a pain that they didn't warn  you about this :(

Google never helped me either lol
