If you are RH negative, come in

I had my 12 week appt yesterday and my OB discussed getting my rhogam shot since my blood type is O- and DH is A+.  Did this with my first, so no biggy.  But he also told me that there is a new blood test that can find out if the baby's blood is negative or positive, and it just so happens that it also tells the sex of the baby!  And it can be done at my next appt!  Have any of you ladies heard about this or are getting it done?  I tried to find information about it online, but didn't find anything.

TIA!

  • As far as I know, it is a regular blood test, but it is fairly new.  They talked about it  during my first pregnancy, but it wasn't available yet.  So I think it has just recently become available.

  • I've never heard of that. Is he talking about a CVS test maybe? I wouldn't do something like that just to know the gender early or avoid a rhogam shot.

ETA: never mind just saw your response OP. No one told me about it at my last appointment, so I guess they don't offer it at my office.

  • I'm RH- and DH is RH+ so I had the Rhogam shot at ~28w last time... then DD turned out to be RH- like me so it was all for naught.  I haven't heard anything about this blood test though... unless it's like the MaterniT21?  I know that is able to tell about DS and the Trisomies as well as the baby's sex but don't know if it tells RH factor or not.  Let us know if you find out what it's called, I'm curious!

  • That's too funny, I'm O- and my husband is A+ as well. My next appointment is on Monday and I was hoping to talk to my Dr about finding out the baby's blood type early. Nice to know there is something, next question to find out is if my insurance covers it.

That is funny!  I'm pretty sure it would be covered because it would take the place of getting the rhogam shot, which is covered.  Will definitely be calling the doctor in the next few days to find out more about it.

  • It sounds like it is MaternitT21, but could be a different one.  That is a fairly new test that can pick up a Y chromosome.  Just a simple blood test that tests the baby's DNA.  Why don't you call back and ask?

  • I'm RH negative.  My husband had blood work done to find out if he is/isn't RH positive.  I should find out at my appt on Friday.  I plan to ask about this blood test.  If you get any additional information please post it!!

  • Google told me that a test for fetal RHD genotyping is offered through the same company that does MaterniT21 testing.  So it's a very similar test, but not the same one.

Sorry for non-linky - but here's the site I found.  It's a bit sparse on information as to how they actually do it, but it's the general idea.  I'll see what I can find on PubMed and update if I find anything for the technically-minded ;-)

     https://www.sequenomcmm.com/Home/Patients/Fetal-RHD-Genotyping/

So that was quicker than expected:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23225162

Basically they do a DNA analysis on the fetal DNA from the maternal blood to look at the RHD genes and a couple genes on the Y chromosome.  So you will definitely find out sex too!

  • I'm RH negative.  (O-) It's really no big deal.  Rhogam shot at 28 weeks and again after delivery if the baby isn't also RH negative.  In my case, he was also O-, so I didn't need another shot.

  • I'm RH- and DH is RH+ so I'm used to having to get the shot at 28 weeks. If I remember right, all my girls are RH+ so I had to have the shot again after they were born. Not a big deal to me, really. It just one shot out of the many blood draws and pokes and sticks that go along with pregnancy....
