Anyone "cater" their own kid's bday party?

Hey all! So my little man is turning two on Saturday and we are having a gymnastics party with close family and friends. It's a mid-afternoon party so it doesn't fall during a meal time so I plan on having a hot chocolate "bar" with marshmallows, whipped cream...etc and some food for those that may be hungry. So I was going to order mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers from a restaurant but that will run me about $140 and I am NOT paying that much money for something I can heat up myself - but i'm just nervous how it would taste. The place we are having it in doesn't have a kitchen so it will have to come from my house and I will use sternos - i'm nervous the chicken nuggets and mozz. sticks will come out soggy - anyone have any experience with this? tips? bake or fry? Thanks!

  • We've made food for DD's birthday parties, but they were at our house, so didn't have to worry so much about stuff getting cold.  Is there another option you could have where it wouldn't matter so much if they were transported or sitting out?  Like bring stuff so people can make their own sandwiches or something like that?

  • I'd be nervous about the texture/temperature as well. If you are set on those options I would definitely bake. What about fruit, veggies, and long hoagies sliced up from the grocery store? Then again sandwiches are hard for kids to eat.

What about a big platter of super creamy mac and cheese then little bowls/cups to serve it in? DD is incredible with a fork so that might also be too hard for little kids.

What about a platter of cheese slices, fruit, veggies and crackers? You could even throw some meat in there, thick slices of ham or pepperoni.

    Have fun!

  • Those foods will likely become soggy. You could do like pp suggested and have deli sandwiches. You could also bring something that could stay warm in a crockpot. I made pulled pork sandwiches, mac&cheese and cornbread for my DDs birthday party. It was super easy and really good. Lasagna would also be easy to keep warm or any other pasta really.
  • i'd just order some pizzas and call it a day

  • I agree with others. Either order pizzas or order a platter or sandwiches. Things that you don't ahve to worry about getting soggy.

  • I have always done what PP suggested and got pizzas and a sandwich platter from Costco, some chips, a veggie platter and that was it.
  • Can you order the chicken tenders from a local grogery store?  It would be way cheaper and should be hot when you pick it up.
  • I did.  I made chicken fingers, meatballs and sub sandwiches - all of which I either made myself or heated up myself.  I also made a veggie tray and a fruit tray.  We had chips and dip.  I think all in all, I spent about $100 for all the food and drinks.  The meatballs stayed warm in a crock pot and the chicken fingers, I wrapped up.  I think it will the cheese sticks will be ok.
