Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Should I be worried

First of all I know that all babies are different, but have just been wondering about my little man.

He will be 6 months old on Thursday...OMG I cannot believe he will be that old.

Anyway, he has not rolled over (at all, not even accidentially). He probably doesn't get as much tummy time as he should, but he does get a fair amount. He also isn't sitting unsupported yet. Should I be worrying about that? He has the strength to do it, but doesn't have the balance part down yet.

He rolls on to his side sometimes and is grabbing his feet and he loves his jumperoo, and to stand and sit on DH and my lap. He's also cooing and laughing and eating his solids really well.

We have his 6mnth appointment on Tuesday, but just wanted to know if I should be concerned about his development.

TIA!

Re: Should I be worried

  • DD didn't roll over until she was 7 months old, and she still only does belly to back. Her ped was not concerned because she was supporting her weight on her legs, could pull up on the Dr's fingers, and was also ahead in her sitting. They said that not all babies hit their milestones in order (which was the case with us). LO is probably A-ok, but it can't hurt to ask the ped to double check. They will probably ask you anyways if LO is hitting certain milestones (atleast that's how our appts usually go).

  • I would not. Our DD will be 8 months tomorrow and she has not attempted to crawl at ALL. I have 3 kids & all started rolling, crawling, walking, talking and so on at different stages. GL

  • DS is only a day younger than your LO, and he's just about at the same place as far as milestones. He's only been rolling from back to front the past few weeks. He started doing it intentionally to grab toys on the floor next to him. He still doesn't quite know how to roll belly to back and gets really mad about it. He's not sitting unassisted more than a few seconds, either. We've been practicing by having him sit in front of me on the floor with his back to my belly. He can kind of balance on my thighs that way. I'm not worried; it's just a matter of time!

  • The average time for sitting up unsupported is 8 months old.  So, it is early for that.  The rolling over would concern me too, though.  My first LO didn't roll over until 8 months old.  They had us go to physical therapy (EI) starting at 7 months old because she wasn't rolling over. Rolling over should occur around 4-5 months old.
  • Our little guy just started rolling consistently in the last few weeks. I was stressing about it but he just started out of the blue. It will happen!

We bought him a boppy pillow and have really encouraged him to sit on his own. And in about a week he picked it up. That was around 5.5 months. Now he's really good.

But crawling! Ha! He couldn't care less. He'd rather stand up.

They lead he way and we follow! I. Think you LO is doing just fine! But ask because you'll feel better!

  • my LO has only rolled tummy to back (and that has only been a few times)... he has no interest in rolling over back to tummy although he has tried a few times and ALMOST makes it over. he would rather just lay on his back and chill. he is not a very active baby. he does sit unassisted and would rather just sit and play. :)

i am trying not to worry, but it is still in the back of my mind.

  • I would be a bit concerned (not worried) about not rolling over. When you see your ped ask them about his muscle tone (different than muscle strength). Our dd wasnt really rolling over at 9 months and didnt get around much. No crawling at all. We found out she has low muscle tone. She started physical therapy and was crawling by 11 months, walking at 15 months. Early intervention is key. They will prob keep an eye on him a bit longer. But put him on his belly as much as possible. That was #1 on PT list. Also encourage him to play on his side by holding a toy, mirror or book for him to look at. You can encourage him to roll over by making him follow a toy over his head to make him twist his body and roll. Don't worry but def bring it up. By the way our DD's tone is great now. She is just super flexible. :)Oh and grabbing feet is good. Takes a lot of tummy muscles. She was doing that too.
