Parenting after a Loss

Intro

Hi everyone! Just wanted to do a quick intro. I started the bump last December after my second miscarriage. On November 30, I welcomed my team green rainbow baby. Kendall Marie was born at 6:27pm, 7 lbs 13 oz and 19 inches long. I love having her, but we are still working on this whole breast feeding thing. Think I have a forceful letdown and/or over supply. Any helpful hints? I'm trying nursing on one side exclusively, hand expressing the other, cold compress. If you went thru this, how long until things regulated for you? TIA!

  • Welcome and so many congrats!  BFing is super hard to get the hang of - both you and your LO have to learn to do it so high five to giving it a go and keep at it!!  My first recommendation is if the hospital where you delivered offers lactation consultant home visits & you can afford it/your insurance covers it - def. take advantage of this!  I had two home visits and they helped me immensely, being able to ask questions from a relaxing environment was so much easier than having to figure everything out at the hospital.  Also, I didn't have super oversupply issues but I had a bit of forceful let down....I just kept nursing on demand and would try different positions and reclines with my LO. Side lying helped with the forceful let down so much, as did trying to feed her while I was reclining back in a chair.  The first 10 days were soooooo hard for us, I had originally set my goal for BFing for a year it was quickly shortened to 6 weeks....but!  once I got through those first 10 days, it got so much easier and now here we are at 7 months and still going strong, no supplementing at all.  Good luck and enjoy the new baby bliss.

  • I have no advice on the BFing. I just wanted to say Hi! And welcome to the board, since I am a newbie to this board myself.
I have short term memory loss. Do not take it personally if I do not remember you right away.
No longer trying to conceive at all.

  • Welcome and congrats!  Kendall Marie is such a pretty name!  I second pp's advice about finding a LC.  A good one can be invaluable.  I had a forceful letdown when we first started BFing and I would try and lean back so that gravity was helping DD out.  HTH!

  • Welcome and congrats! I had oversupply too. My LC recommended block feeding, so you nurse fom one side in blocks of time. Mine is 4 hours. It has really helped! Also, try to lean back when you are nursing so your LO doesn't get too much of the letdown. Honestly that hasn't helped much for me. But as PP said, definitely hire a LC. It helped me so much with both my kids! Good luck.

  • Congrats and welcome to you and Kendall!

Re BFing - you're probably still dealing with some initial engorgement at this point. I second the advice about seeing a LC if you can.

We dealt with forceful letdown and oversuppy for a while, and it really helped to let DS nurse until letdown, then pop him off and let the extra spray into a burp bloth until it was down to a dribble, then latch him back on. Otherwise he would choke on the milk because it was flowing too fast.

    Good luck!

  • Welcome and congrats on your little girl! I had a pretty forceful let down in the beginning, too. DD would choke all the time and it scared to crap out of me! I found it helpful to lay her so she was parallel to my body and lean back so she was more on top of the breast and looking down at it. This seemed to give her more control over the flow. I still do this with her sometimes in the morning when I'm really engorged.
