Re: gifts price range?

  • I don't think there is an average or normal - it just depends what you can afford and what you are comfortable spending. We're spending about $100 on DS this year. I don't really have an issue spending more, but there is nothing big he wants, really, and I'm not going to just buy a million things just to spend more.

  • We're already up to over $300 and are planning on getting him a few small things, so we'll probably end up spending between $400-$450. I wish we could and would budget to spend less than what we are. Honestly though, he doesn't have many toys, just a lot of books and puzzles. He only gets toys on his birthday in June and Christams because I refuse to buy him toys throughout the year. We bought a LeapPad 2 Explorer bundle pack and a bike with matching pads and helmet, so that is the majority of our $300 spent.

Like PP said, it just depends on what you're comfortable spending and can afford to spend.

  • I'm a SAHM, so our budget for DD1 is $100 and DD2 is just getting a book and her name on the big present to share. The big gift is a kitchen which I scored on a great deal from Kohl's ($50). I think a what's right is whatever you can afford. I feel someone is overspending when they put it on a credit card they can't pay off or not pay other bills (though I guess if that's what you are comfortable with to each their own.) If we made $300,000 a year I'd probably buy more than I am now (though I hope I wouldn't since kids don't need that much stuff!).

  • What do they really need??  DS has so much stuff I am not buying much for Christmas.  Plus our families will buy stuff too so I'm not spending more than $75 or $100.

  • We have spent around 350, but by the time I am done with stocking stuffers, etc it will be closer to 400. I know my parents have already spent like 500 on him :/ He is already spoiled...can't help it our family goes all out at Christmas!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

This is us exactly. I think we are closer to $500 at this point because his "Santa" gift is a big train table and wooden Thomas set-up. Those things aren't cheap. I usually start shopping early, especially when I find things on sale, and stash them away. I feel like a build a good amount of gifts to give him for the price I end up paying. Seems crazy, but Christmas is also our big holiday and we go all out. And he has 2 sets of grandparents that also go crazy so we usually end up with waaay more gifts than he needs so we donate as much as we can in terms of "old" toys.

    Same here.

It just seems like the more you have the more you have to clean up.  Plus it just keeps multiplying year after year.  We do 'no gifts' at her birthday because it's just too much!
