Baby food carrots

I have been making my own baby food an have been having a lot of luck with it and its coming out well. Except for carrots. I steamed them and then pured them and they frozen fine but when I thaw them the water separates and I'm left with water and chunky carrots. Any suggestions/ tips? TIA

Re: Baby food carrots

  • Carrots, Peas, and Green Beans were really tricky to get smooth enough.  I have found that with carrots I also drain off the clear water and then I mix the homemade ones with either oatmeal or store bought carrots to help dissipate the chunks. The chunks I have are really small though, not like chunk chunks.  I'm not sure if that's what you mean, if there was a big chunk I would just toss that out.  So far it's working for me.

  • i steam my carrots above the water and don't add water to the puree unless it just needs it. if it does then just a little at a time. put it in cubes, wait till it is cool and then put in the freezer. never had carrots come out watery.

  • The chunks aren't real big it's just not as smooth as the other pured I have done . Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try to pure it more and not add extra water and/ mix it with something else. Thanks !

If any baby food I make seperates, I dump the water and warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds then stir it up really good. If it's pureed well to begin with and then thawed all the way you shouldn't have chunks.

  • Carrots are one of the things I avoid making myself because of the nitrates, especially in the water if you add the boil-water to smooth out the puree.  I buy that at the store instead, although I do make peas and green beans myself.  I find I have to add quite a bit of the water to the food processor and process the heck out of it!

FYI, the nitrates are only an issue with well water and store-bought carrots are no safer than what you make at home. The only thing that decreases the risk -- which is minimal to begin with -- is buying organic. You can get more info here: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/nitratearticle.htm#.UMfvK4P3qHg
