My oldest nephew is 21 today. I was a week and a half shy of turning 21 when he was born!!! How fast time flies - I swear there are many days that I feel like I was just in college and now my nephew is in college and 21!!!!
Just for kicks - how did you celebrate your 21st birthday?
I was still up at school, finals were just ending and a lot of people had already gone home for the winter break but I was working at the mall so still there. A friend of mine's birthday is the day before so we all headed to the bar (under 21 could get in to the bar but you got a bracelet so everyone knew you couldn't drink) and at midnight, I had my bracelet cut off and my guy friends plowed me with drinks until the bar closed and then we all walked home (my sorority house was next to their fraternity house). I drove home the next day and celebrated with my family and that night, my sisters and I went to a bar for the 1st time together.
Re: 21 - how did you celebrate?
I was home all night with my immediate family. My soon to be husband (now ex) didn't want me to go out without him. I guess he just wanted to be the first to take me to a bar but he was out of town on that day. I remember sitting home all night doing nothing. It would have also been finals week in college so I was probably studying for finals too. Not very exciting at all!
Happy birthday to your nephew! I agree that time seems to fly by. It seems like it was not very long ago when I was that age too and it is scary how fast the years pass.
mine was sooooo lame. I had a 13 month old baby and my dh (ex now) was working nights in the air force. I went (with the baby) to the grocery store and bought a bottle of wine. They didn't even card me. Probably due to the bags under my eyes and the baby on my hip. I was very disappointed
several weeks later my dh took me to movies and out for drinks and then to the casino to celebrate. I put ten dollars on 21 on the roulette table and it hit. So that was awesome.
Happy birthday to your nephew!
I have a really really poor memory for things like this, so I'm only guessing.
Since the drinking age in my state was 19 when I turned 19, I did the whole crazy drinking thing two years earlier. By the time I was 21, it wasn't that big of a deal.
Didn't have a boyfriend at the time, so more than likely, I worked at the TV station and might have gone out for a few drinks afterwards. Doubt it was very exciting. Yawn.
Senior year of college. Went out dancing with my girlfriends. Drinking wasn't a big deal because I went to college in New Orleans back when the drinking age was still 18, so the whole binge thing was already pretty much over and done freshman year!
I was in college too, living in a little house run by a cross-cultural organization. My birthday's the day before Valentine's Day, and I planned to go out for dinner with some friends on actual Valentine's day since that fell on a Friday.
However, most of the students at the house were single, so they all asked me whether they could me because they desperately didn't want to be alone on V.Day. So there were over 20 kids at the restaurant! We went to a little hole-in-the-wall Thai place and they were very sweet about it!
Unfortunately, nearly everyone gave me boxes of chocolate for gifts, and there was no way I could eat them all, so afterwards I went with my two friends to give out chocolates to all the homeless people sitting around! There are lots of homeless people in that city so they loved it, and that made us incredibly happy too!

Happy birthday to your nephew!!
On my actual 21st, it was a week night. I was still living at home and working. My mom made a cake and slammed a 6 pack of Zima on the table and said drink up!
The following weekend after my birthday, I headed down to Orlando to visit my sister and her hubby (now ex) and we partied hard on Church Street. My friend Doug, who I met through chat rooms waaayyy back in 96 flew in from San Diego as a surprise. That was awesome to finally meet him! Good times.
