Multiple Solids Questions...

Sorry for the repeat questions but I am a little lost when it comes to solids. We just started solids yesterday so here are my questions:

How often do I offer solids?

How much to I offer? (i am making my own food)

Do I still give as much formula in the day as I normally would?

When do I offer? (after bottle, before bottle?)

As you can see I am pretty clueless. LOL

TIA!

Re: Multiple Solids Questions...

  • With DD we started with 1 tbsp a day of oatmeal mixed with BM. Since until 12 months most of the nutrition comes from BM or formula, I intend to always BF before giving solids. I wait 30 min ish after a feeding to give a solid meal.

We introduced a new food every 3-4 days. She now gets 2 meals (lunch and dinner) and eats 2-3 tbsp each time.

Start with yams, sweet potatoes, pears, bananas, or other easily digested solids. My pedi said to introduce green veggies after.

  • How often do I offer solids? He eats dinner with us and on days he goes to the babbysitter, he eats lunch there so he can eat with the big kids and dinner with us as well

How much to I offer? (i am making my own food) I do one ice cube's worth

Do I still give as much formula in the day as I normally would? I dont replace meals

When do I offer? (after bottle, before bottle?) I do in-between bottles

not that Im an expert, but this us what we do

  • How often do I offer solids? Once per day to start. Offer the same thing at least 3 times before moving on to another food.

How much to I offer? We give half a jar... that's about 8 tblsp

Do I still give as much formula in the day as I normally would? Yes

When do I offer? We offer it half way btwn. You don't want to wait until baby is too hungry because they will get easily frustrated waiting for the spoon.

  • 1. I usually give her solids twice a day. Sometimes only once on days I'm feeling lazy.

    2. I offer her 1 jar, probably about the same amount as an icecube. She'll usually want more so I give her about half of another jar.

    3. She still takes the same amount of formula.

    4. I usually offer food first then the bottle.

How often do I offer solids? We started with just dinner. Now we do breakfast and dinner.

How much to I offer? (i am making my own food)I do half a container of veg or fruit plus oatmeal.

Do I still give as much formula in the day as I normally would? If my DS seems hungry, I will offer him the bottle. Though I have noticed it seems to be less now that he is eating solids. He used to finish 6 oz every time but now he usually only drinks about 4 oz of formula.

When do I offer? (after bottle, before bottle?)I always give him solids before the bottle. I offer him the bottle after he finishes. Sometimes he drinks; sometimes he doesn't want it.

  • With ds3, I started out at 5 months (which was earler then I wanted to start but I'm trying to get him to keep everything down) with oatmeal twice a day. After a week I added in apple to his oatmeal. Now he wants 3 meals a day since the big boys eat 3 times a day. He sees us eating at the table and goes crazy. Ds2 did this as well. In the mornings he gets 1 1/2 tbsp of oatmeal with half container of apple or pear or banana. Lunch is a contrainer of green beans or peas (something green and not super sweet). Dinner is a container and half of a veggie and fruit.

     His bottles are at 7am, 1030am, 1pm, 430pm and 645pm. He takes 5-6oz per bottle. His meals are at 8am, 12pm, 530pm.

Once he turns 6 months we'll be switching to BLW. I prefer doing BLW which I did with ds2 but since we started ds3 before 6 months I couldn't do it yet.

  • I'm just going to add some tips that I have recently learned. The most important thing is that the solids don't replace the formula or bm. DD started to not drink as much formula when he went to two meals of solids a day so I cut back on the solids to one meal per day until her formula intake was back up. Now she does fine with two meals and still drinking enough formula.

Make sure that you wait at least three days between offering new foods and give LO time to get use to liking the new food. I would think DD hates the new food but after a couple days she likes it. I think she was just getting used to the texture and flavors.

It is pretty much a trial an error and eventually you will find what works for your LO. My DD won't take her bottle after solids so I do bottle and then solids where as my cousin's daughter was the opposite.
