Babies: 6 - 9 Months

frequent napping... still?!

DD loves her sleep.  STTN 7 pm to 7am, occasionally will wake up between 4-6, but easily goes back to sleep after a feed.  We put her down awake, hand her the lovey and she puts herself to sleep easily.  We are very lucky in that department.

My issue is that she still takes 4 1-hour naps a day!  About twice a week she'll take a 2 hour nap in there and then she might only take 3 naps, but that's not her norm.  About a month ago, I was able to keep her up for 2 hours between naps and then she would take 3 daily, but she's regressed big time.  For the past 2 weeks she is fussy as can be after 1 hour of awake time.  I was just about to feed her some breakfast but she was crying in the chair and I didn't want to make food a bad experience for her, so I decided to see what would happen if I laid her down.  She cried for a couple of seconds and now she's sleeping again!  It's only 11 am and she's on her second nap for the day!

When are we going to get off this frequent napping treadmill?  I feel like she's never going to reach any milestones because she's never awake and happy for long enough to practice.  She still hasn't rolled from back to tummy.

Re: frequent napping... still?!

  • DS JUST went down to 3 naps a day a month ago (he's almost 8 1/2 months now). He usually takes one long nap a day but the rest of the day he just takes short naps that are about 1/2 to 1 hour long. At six months he was still only able to be awake for 1- 1 1/2 hours at a time. Now he's up to 2, sometimes 2 1/2 hours of awake time without being fussy. Sometimes if he only takes short naps all day he STILL gets four naps.  I have done a LOT of worrying/trying to figure out what's up with all the napping but when I add up all of his daytime sleep it's not too much. It's not like he's taking three 2-3 hour naps or anything. We tried to condense his naps into two longer naps but it was a major fail that involved a lot of crying and him waking up at night three times when he usually sleeps straight through. We are just going to follow his cues from now on and let him take as many naps as he needs. I figure it could be so much worse...some babies don't nap at all! I will be perfectly happy having a two or three year old that still naps twice a day. That seems to be the direction we are heading.

    Wow, sounds nice to me!

This! My lo has always been a terrible sleeper, day and night!

  • At nine months old Chase takes a nap every 90 minutes awake.

He is not a great night sleeper though, and I can honestly say that I wish I had your problem. at this point 2 hours of uninterrupted sleep would be wonderful :)

  • My DS takes 3 naps daily totalling 2.53.5 hrs depending on what's happening that day. I don't really worry that they're not more consolidated. Sleep begets sleep and I'm just happy to get naps in general. He sleeps better at night as a result.

We're in the same boat. DS takes 3-4 naps a day and I would LOVE if they were an hour long. He sleeps for exactly a half hour. Once in a blue moon it'll be a little longer, but I definitely spend a ton of time getting him to sleep! I figure if he's STTN I'll take it, and hope he grows out of it eventually. For now I don't think it's anything to worry about.

This is us, with my guy taking exactly 40 minute naps. We do get 2.5 hours between naps, so I can see your frustration with so little time awake. That said, if the pediatrician isn't concerned, LO is growing well, etc I'd not worry about it. I have known babies that sleep a lot and babies that sleep little, they all vary so much.

My dd sttn and a few months ago now she cut down from 4 short naps a day to 2 naps a day.  They are longer ones too.  I guess, seeing as this is what you're hoping to achieve, or wondering how it could be different..well..my dd kind of called it.  The only thing that I could suggest to maybe help your dd have a longer sleep is to maybe try to get her to eat lots before that first nap of the day.  I only keep dd up 1.5 hrs -2hr max after she's up in the morning.  However, she has a bottle first thing when she gets up, then an hr later fills up with a big bowl of cereal.  So, she's always laying down with a full full tummy.  Perhaps that could be the trick to having her sleep a little longer?  I also do my best to ensure that she has a full tummy for her afternoon nap. I know that the full tummy thing isn't necessarily a guarantee for keeping her sleeping longer, but it would help to prevent the waking up from hunger when she could've slept longer.  Otherwise, it's probably just going to have to happen on it's own.

Thanks for the tip.  I usually feed her cereal between nap 1 and 2, but I'll try about an hour after she first gets up since she BF's right upon waking.  When I called the pedi, they asked me to bring her in.  We have that appointment later this morning.
