Baby Names

name game: if you were of a different nationality...

I have an idea for a name game: Pick a language/nationality, and then choose a a boy/girl name you would use if you lived in that region (add pronunciations if you think people won't know how to pronounce)

For me, I really wish I was French so I could use:

Girl - Aurelie (orh-e-LEE)

Boy - Bertrand (bare-TRAHN)

  • I like Cruz for a boy and Blanca for a girl but neither goes with DH's very white sounding last name
  • I'm not sure about a boy name. However, for a girl I would love to live in Sweden with my girls: Stina and Malin.

    Girl: Guadalupe (Lupe)

    Boy:  Jorge, Juan, Sergio

I also love Teresa pronounced the Spanish way and have it on the list if we have a girl. If we were having twin daughters I'd use Teresa for sure.

  • I like both Irish and German names so I'll do both. Irish names I like are Tadhg (Tieg). I love the sound of the name and the meaning. I also like Siofra for a girl. German names that I like are Klaus for a boy and Isolde for a girl. Sorry for no paragraphs TB gods are frowning upon me.

Greek people aren't actually named Hermione (at least, no one I know in "modern" times), so I'd say you can use it regardless of nationality. :)

Hmm, I would probably say Italian. I love a lot of Italian names like Luca, Lucia, Giovanni, Giada, etc.

OP, my old apartment is actually in your sig pic, hah!

  • I LOVE Russian names. I'm not one bit Russian. I honestly can't pick because there are so many good ones, especially for girls. I love that they are beautiful but still strong.

  • I would go Greek for sure. Along the lines of Persephone or Achilles.

Hm, these are more Greek mythology. Does that still count? :)

Ditto, though I am Lithuanian, but not like FROM there, so using a very distinctly Eastern European name would seem odd, especially with our very Anglo-Saxon last name.

I love the name Priyanka for a girl (Indian). I really like Caelum for a boy, but that's used plenty by Americans, so not sure it counts.

  • Oh, this is spot on!

I love the name Sakura but it'd probably get a lot of weird looks while stuck on a non-Japanese kiddo.

My sis married a Korean man so she at least got to use Korean middle names.  I married another white euro mutt so we got nothing.
