Question for distance runners (post partum)

Hi ladies. DS will be 6 months on the 21st. I ran my 3rd half marathon this past sunday. A little background: I was in the military for 12 years before I got out to have DS, I've run 3 marathons, 2 half marathons, and countless other races 10 miles and below. I was unable to continue running after my 1st tri because of a broken tailbone and pretty bad symphesis pubic dysfunction. I walked a lot and did Brazil Butt Lift cardio for the remainder of my pregnancy. I started running (jogging) again 7 weeks post partum.

Two questions: is it normal to still have pains in my pelvis area during/after a run? Only way I can explain it is my uterus hurts. And when will I get faster? I am still running way slower than I used to. I finished Sunday's half 15 minutes slower than my slowest half (and I didn't even train for that one!). I've heard/read about so many women who've gotten faster after having babies. That is definitely not the case here and it's really kicking my confidence's butt. TIA.

Re: Question for distance runners (post partum)

  • So you've been running for about 4 months and still having pelvic issues?  I would definitely talk to the doctor about that.

I didn't have any pelvic pain when I started back (just some bladder issues) but I was able to run throughout the pregnancy, so I don't know if that comes in to play.

As for speed, I'm sure that comes along with how often/far you're running.  I did a half at 3 months pp and I certainly wasn't PRing, but I was faster than the 1/2 I ran during the first trimester by then.

Again, this might have to do with the fact that I ran throughout the pregnancy - It makes sense that people who ran while carrying an extra 20something pounds at the end of their pregnancy would be faster after the 20something pounds came off.

  • I was in the best running shape of my life right when I got pregnant. I take DS out in the stroller Monday thru Friday, running 3 days and walking 2, then doing long runs on Saturdays by myself. This averages to 25 to 30 miles a week. Depending on my routes I've gotten down to about an 8:40 pace with the stroller. This is still over a minute slower than my normal 1/2 marathon race pace. I guess it'll just take some more time. I've had a couple foot surgeries and still bounced back quicker.

  • I didn't run until after I had my girls.  I would talk to your doc because pelvic pain does not sound normal, at least not lasting.
  • Since I run with the stroller 3 days a week anywhere from 3 to 7 miles at 8:40 to 9:00 pace. I'm very used to it. I do my long runs by myself but those are only 8:30 to 9:00 pace also. I need to cut at least a minute from each to be back to normal again but I've hit a plateau. Maybe it's the pelvic issue or this is just my new normal. I don't know, it just sucks.
