??'s for those who BF and FF

I recently discovered that my breast milk has a high level of lipase, causing the fat to break down and the milk to taste horrible.  My entire freezer stash is crap now thanks to this (though I am saving it to try mixing with solids when the time comes).  I have a few times coming up that I will have a sitter taking care of the baby and I want to have formula around for them to give to him.

So, my questions are:

1. What kind of formula are you using?

2.  Did your LO do ok with the formula when first introduced and did they return to the breast (or pumped bottle) ok?

I want  LO to get breastmilk more often than not, but I know I can't pump enough by the time I have a sitter coming over.

TIA!

Thanks!  Matthew is so low key and easy going that I don't think he'll have any problem.  He gets a bottle of pumped milk every night (which I want to continue doing), so he's ok with the bottle itself, just hope he is ok with the formula.

  • We are now EFF, but had to supplement a little while EBF.

    1. What kind of formula are you using?  Nutramigen, we have dairy allergies.

    2.  Did your LO do ok with the formula when first introduced and did they return to the breast (or pumped bottle) ok? Yes, LO did fine going back and forth.  We gave him pumped milk before bedtime when EBF.  Because I didn't pump as much as he ate, when we went out, we usually had to suplement with formula.  Nutramigen doesn't taste great, but he did good going back and forth.   Also, when transitioning, for a few days we did formula bottles with a couple nursing sessions mixed in.

If possible, it's always easier if you can mix in a little BM to help the taste.

  • We did both bf and formula for awhile. DS had no problem going back and forth. We used Enfamil Newborn and just switched to Infant. He did not do good with the Enfamil for gas, cant remember the exact name.

  • We use Enfamil gentlease and haven't had much problem! We started off mixing half and half to get her used to it...although I think she would have been fine going all in. She typically has about 34 oz a day because I dont pump enough for her at work.

  • My LO has only had a handful of formula bottles but she did fine. We got the Target brand (Up & Up) with the purple writing... their version of Enfamil Gentlease.
  • Just jumping in to say that a friend who has the lipase issue found that if she mixed thawed milk with fresh milk or milk she scalded before freezing her DD ate it just fine. Maybe this will work for you?

  • I recently discovered I have the same lipase issue when I freeze my milk [smells and tastes metallic] but DD doesn't even flinch when I offer it to her. Not all babies will reject funny tasting milk! Has your LO rejected it?

Sorry, no advice regards the formula!

Lo was on Enfamil Newborn originally when we switched to FF, and no issues really. I think the bottle makes a bigger difference- we used TTs.

and, FWIW, one of my friends had the same issue with lipase. If you boil the milk briefly before freezing, it helps. I know that doens't do much for your current freezer stash, but going forward it can :)

Thanks Steph!  I know about the boiling, the problem is I don't have enough to boil.  What I do pump each day is given to him in a bottle right before bedtime.  I tried skipping the bottle and just nursing him a few nights ago, but he wanted the bottle.  It's like I just have enough milk to tide him over all night.

Oh yes...he looked at me like I was out of my effing mind trying to give him that milk.  LOL.  I didn't realize anything was wrong with it at first, so I was confused why he wouldn't take it.  Then I tasted it and realized how AWFUL it tasted.

Mel - (sorry not quoted) - I am going to try mixing some of the freezer milk with fresh or scaled milk.  Thanks!
