Acid Poop.

Hey, gang.

Seth's poop has been burning him pretty badly these past few weeks. I found that if I do not change him IMMEDIATELY, he will get a diaper rash. I am always with him so I see when he is pooping and can change it right away, but if I miss it, even for a few minutes, he gets burned everywhere the poop was touching.

Does anyone know what I need to change in his diet to fix this? I am calling his ped tomorrow about it.

  • Has he been having alot of dairy like cheese, yogurt, or WCM? I know when I was reading about lactose intolerance it said that introducing dairy can cause an increase in acidic poop!

  • Tomatoes and citrus can cause this, too.  Is it constant?  We just changed Ben's formula and it has been a lot better!  We were battling horrible diaper rash.  In the three days since we have changed over, his diaper rash is almost completely healed and gone and isn't getting worse when he poops (which it was doing before).

  • This happens to Aria when she gets juice more than once a day, or when it's not diluted enough.

Do you put anything on him as a barrier? My pedi suggested Vaseline as a barrier if she has no rash, but is going through a time with that "acid poop". It seems to help a lot.

  • Citrus and tomatoes do it to Ian. He has also had it when he had a little bit of a bug. Barrier, barrier, barrier...that's the key. What worked best when it was really bad was Vaseline, then an ointment, and powder. I know it sounds like a lot, but the key was to put as much between his skin and poo that I could. It helped a lot and we got through it, finally.

  • Teething poop does it to Eowyn. If it isn't an easily identifiable food trigger - could it be tething? Try using a thick barrier cream (assuming you aren't using cloth) at every change and see if that helps the problem. At least until you identify what the culprit is.
