Natural Birth

Call me crazy...

...but, I am so looking forward to birth!
I am a FTM, and plan on going natural. I am delivering in a hospital, with a doctor, but I also live in Canada...and my doc is pro natural birth, it seems like the states hospitals/doc push for intervention more, IMO.

Anyways...I am almost 31 weeks, and I thought I would start getting nervous, but I am just plain old excited! I am so curious and excited to go through this whole experience. I guess that is good...because fear & anxiety would work against me, but I also feel like I'm half nuts for being excited about finding out what it will be like!

Also...obviously the excitement of meeting this LO growing inside me just has me giddy! lol! :) Thought I would share...any tips on keeping positive as I get closer? Any tips on keeping calm & focused? Any tips on ANYTHING in general lol!?

  • I've always been like that too!  Keep up the positive attitude!  It will be the best help you can get.  (:

  • I'm actually pretty excited too and this will be my second time!  As far as tips on staying positive, you might check out Ina May's Guide to Childbirth if you haven't already.  The first half of the book has the most beautiful, inspiring birth stories.  I guess my one tip for your baby's birth day would be just to take it one contraction at a time.  There's a Hypnobirthing affirmation that says, "Every surge of my body brings my baby closer to me".  Stay in the moment, take each surge as it comes and don't worry about the next one until it's here.  Remember you will always get a break.
  • I had an amazing delivery with my son and I fully look forward to this one in July! :)

  • That is great that you are excited about your birth.  My one suggestion would be to remember L&D will be hard but it is worth it.  Take one contraction at a time and remember that the pain is only temporary.  The other thing is to surround yourself with a positve support team.  My doula and DH were aswome.  They told me how great I was doing throughout labor.  Their positive attitude made a huge difference and I really enjoyed my birth. GL!

I agree.  I've had two labors and both time, it honestly caught me off guard how hard it was and how painful and intense contractions were.  I was as educated and prepared as you can be both times, but even after doing it once, I was like "whoa, this is hard!"  I'm not saying this to scare you but so you don't become discouraged if you have the same experience and think you can't do it.  You can.  Just remember that it is pain with a purpose and each contraction is bringing your baby closer.  Focus on staying relaxed and breathing through each contraction.  It really helped me to focus on keeping my jaw relaxed, because if you tense up your jaw, the rest of you will naturally tense up too (thanks to Ina May for that tip!)

  • I'm excited and this is my third. Labor really does hurt and it's hard. I see it as a challenge, I get excited to prove how 'strong' i am by giving birth naturally. Sounds silly, but it works for me. and I really do feel super empowered afterwards.
  • Don't think about it. Just deal with the pleasures and pains as they arrive.

I'll have to agree with this as well. I was super excited to experience labor and then transition totally caught me off guard. I experienced a difficult and more painful labor because my baby had a 14.5 inch head that came down tilted though. It is really awesome you're excited but just remember that it will be challenging. I sort of ignored the reality of how hard/intense it could be and it bit me in the butt!

Oh...I forgot to mention, I also expect to feel like I might die lol...BUT the pain will end! I feel inspired...and like another poster said, I am excited to prove I can do it! I am very competitive in sports and love challenges. My sister has 6 kids all natural births (except one due to complications she had some minor interventions) and a few home births & my SIL has 4 all natural, my Mom had 5 babies, all natural...and my DH is 100% supportive, so I think I'm set up pretty good in the positive encouragement department, and they have all warned me that at one point I will be convinced I can't go on - and said that's usually near the end lol. Thanks for all the tips!! :D
