Babies: 6 - 9 Months

do you use/prefer tylenol or ibuprofen?

My son just recently turned 6 months so we now have the option of ibprofen in addition to tylenol.

Which do you use most?  How do you decide which to use for what?  What's your go-to for fever?  For teething?

I can't seem to find any good information on why you would use one or the other or if one is better for certain things.

What do you use for yourself?

I find that ibuprofen is a more effective pain reliever than tylenol.  My LO hasn't needed anything since 6mo, but I intend to give ibuprofen if she does need pain relief.  And alternate for bad pain/fever.

I've always been an ibuprofen person. I also have had friends that prefer ib for their infants just because it seems to work better...was just curious what the majority of mommas thought. Thanks!

  • ibuprofen.  Personally I think Tylenol barely takes the edge off if I take it myself.  I have noticed that ibuprofen seems to last longer for my son and since it is an anti-inflamatory seems to be more effective for teething.

  • Generally speaking, ibuprofen.  But for fevers, make sure to have both on hand.  Because they're totally different medications, you can stagger them so that your LO has something in their system every 2-3 hours, vs ever 4-6 when using Tylenol OR Motrin.

  • DH is a pharmacist.  He always says Tylenol for pain, motrin for fever.  However, PP is correct about switching the 2 off for a fever.

  • I haven't had to use either yet, since *knock on wood* my kids have not had a fever over 99.7.  Personally for myself though I use ibuprofen.

  • Baby Advil has been our savior during teething hell! I gave LO Tylenol when he seemed uncomfortable after his vaccines and it really didn't seem to do anything. Tylenol doesn't help me personally either. We're pretty much an ibuprofen family all around.

  • Ibuprofen all the way. Tylenol has never worked well for myself or DS.

  • my pharmacist actually recommends both in rotation. tylenol is for pain and fever ibuprofen is more for swelling and inflammation.

  • I prefer Ibuprofen. Tylenol never seems to help us much, plus Ibuprofen lasts a lot longer

  • My husband is a physician and he and her pedi both agree...Tylenol and Motrin in rotation for fever. The mommy in me believes that Motrin helps her sleep better so I prefer to give that at night if she is teething.
